The early Auburn football teams even into the late 1910's was called Plainmens, or Wareagles. Auburn didn't start using Tigers until long after the papers had been calling their football teams the plainmens, like the the football history book I have in front of me printed in 1936 says LSU first football team was 1892 and talks of the plainsmen of Auburn not the Tigers of Auburn.
Football was introduced at LSU in 1892 by Dr. Charles E. Coates. In 1893 a game was with Tulane, for LSU first ever real opponent.
Just like in the history of LSU football you see no 1918 team, but there was one, but like the 1892 team it didn't play any vasity opponent. Due to most teams including LSU canceling football until after the war was over.

Mike could totally take Aubie in a fight to the death.

    I'd pay to see it.

My girlfriend is from Montgomery so I love to give Auburn fans a hard time.

Princeton was called the Lions first,
In 1882 humor magazine called The Princeton Tiger as a take off of the two Lions in front of one of the old Princeton buildings and the school nickname at the time came into print. That is the first time you see Tigers with Princeton, and its not until 1911 when they change the two Lions for two Tigers that Princeton becomes the Tigers.
Princeton's first fight songs are about Lions, its not until 1905 they get Kenneth S. Clark '05 composed a song about a Princeton tiger.
Princeton picked up the nickname Tigers from the old football unis they wore, of Burn orange and black stripes on their stockings around 1882-89.

I can't quibble because I'm no expert and don't know who the author of your book is or his qualifications. I only know what you say doesn't jive with Auburn's records of it's own history. I guess it's a moot point anyhow.

Where did Auburn's "Tigers" name come from? LSU's is from the Louisiana Confederate units serving in Lee's army (known then as the La. Tigers), but what is Auburn's history with the nickname?

The name Tigers supposedly comes from the same poem by Oliver Goldsmith that Auburn got the name Auburn from. This poem also has to do with the whole "Plains" thing too.

Like the quote very much. But what about if good men do something and it hurts someone's feelings ? Does that matter ?

I wish LSU would have always been called the Bayou Bengals since they're are so many darn Tigers. Miss. St should stick with the Maroon, Auburn the Plainsmen, as War Eagle is realy a a battle cry, not a nickname I'm told. I won't even get into the Ole Miss ncikname, that has been discussed way too much for completely different reasons.

One thing we do have going for us that is real nice, especially when posting on message boards, is that there is only on LSU

There are so many OSU's and MSU's and UA or AU's, and USC's and UM's abd UT's, etc.
