Also, buy whole chickens, cut them up and remove the skin. Lazy people buy cut up skinless and pay a premium. Buy whole fruit and peel, slice and dice, place in tupperware and presto, healthy sweet snacking. Keep cut up lettuce and tomatoes in a tupperware bowl and have a salad whenever you feel like it. It's a good, light healthy side dish and goes as well with a broiled sirloin as french fries do. There's no need to be fat unless you want to be.

People who buy boneless skinless chicken also make terrible gumbos.

There are times when healthy eating must take a vacation. Gumbo weather is one of them.

I find that people who put boneless skinless chicken in gumbo also have tomatoes in there.

i hope all of you are just joking about the perishable nature of vegetables vs processed foods. this inherent difference makes processed foods cheaper than they would otherwise be.

and who the hell eats frozen tomatoes?

of course the poor can and should eat healthy. personal responsibility is always paramount, but the gov shouldnt make it harder by subsidizing crap. if it were up to me, the free food that people get would be healthy---id remove most processed foods from the WIC list. man, the coke, kraft and general mills lobbyists would go crazy.

I exploit my laziness and affluence to eat healthier. Salad was too much of a hassle to make until Bag-O-Salad came out. It's expensive as hell, but I eat salad everyday now.

As have I. There were years when trying to get my business started that my income was 12-16K a year after Uncle Sam got his corporate tax.. I didn't buy (much) crap food, and I didn't gain one pound as a result. As a matter of fact, I lost weight when I was making little money. This wasn't because I was forced to eat cheap and fatty foods. It was because I actually made a sacrifice and ate less amounts of the healthy stuff I was previously eating - i.e. - I CUT SPENDING. That was kind of my point... The 'poor' people I'm referring to aren't hungry, they're spoiled. They're not cutting back. They are putting their hands out there, getting money, and living like they want to live. Just like hogs at a slop trough. Admittedly, it's not ALL of them but the problem is bigger than you seem to believe.

You first, pops. I kinda like the view from up here.

But that's just it. They don't eat cheap fat food because they're poor, they eat it because they don't care, or don't know better. They're not going to McD's for a "treat", or saving money to buy beer. However the concept of a "poor" person "saving" to buy beer... seems like that particular example you made is of a person with his priorities all phucked up. Seems like saving for something other than beer would be more helpful for this person, but I'm the @sshole.

Newsflash, Red... There are actually a great number of people that spend and eat just like they would if they weren't "poor", only they are doing it with someone else's money. Of course, you don't seem to believe that anyone would exploit the system like that, with the exception of large corporations exploiting tax laws. You see it the other way around; that most poor people are genuinely trying and just can't make it, and that all corporations and rich people are evil money grubbing entities that want those poor people to stay that way.. Again, you tell me to "get off my tower" while shouting from the top of yours.

Ok you knee jerk Liberal.. Gee, that got us somewhere in the discussion didn't it? :rolleye33:

As far as the little Mexican lady, I'm not interested in criminals' grocery lists. But, how do you know if she's illegal? Another assumption? That would be pretty prejudice of you. Perhaps you asked her for her citizenship papers while you're in line and all up in her grocery list like a thong on Oprah? Wouldn't that be profiling? Isn't that a big no no?? And you call me a knee-jerk Republican... pshhh...

That bagged stuff tastes like crap. Fresh is where it's at. It doesn't take long to cut up a bunch of romaine.

ONLY NOBODY HAS SAID THAT. I make a simple comment on how its not hard for poor folks to get fat on cheap food and every junior G-man in the house gets the friggin' notion that I'm daring to defend the poor.

Those stupid, ungrateful, twinkie-eating porch monkeys are too lazy to chop Romaine lettuce. They don't eat white beans and rice with fat meat and cornbread, they get fat stealing our caviar, sushi, lobster, and goose pate and paying for it with food stamps!

    Let them eat cake.
