Don't know the exact measurement changes, but the size of the bat barrel was reduced, along with reducing the weight to length ratios. Under the old rules, they were swinging metal tree trunks that were light as a feather. EDIT: the bat changes happened in 1999
there was a specific ratio change after that '98 season. Since then homers half been cut almost exactly (oxymoron?) in half. Not to mention the speed of the ball off the bat had become beyond dangerous for pitchers to react. that was a product of those huge barrels you probably remember seeing and using years ago. the maximum weight:length difference was changed from five to three (34-inch bat could not weigh less than 31 ounces) and the maximum diameter of the barrel was shrunk from 2 3/4 " to 2 5/8" inches. Baseballs were also changed from wilson to rawlings which the former was a more juiced ball. Huge drops in averages have resulted as well.
The one stat that concerns me this weekend is our .242 batting avg versus right handed SEC pitchers. We hit lefties at a .332 clip. MSU will start all righties this weekend. Fortunately, it doesn't seem as though MSU has a dominant starting pitcher. Time for Mestepey's luck to turnaround...
According to Jim, there is rain in the area but not a cloud in the sky! lol, he's already in rare form
