From the article: Antifascists call such actions defensive. Hate speech against vulnerable minorities, they argue, leads to violence against vulnerable minorities. But Trump supporters and white nationalists see antifa’s attacks as an assault on their right to freely assemble, which they in turn seek to reassert. The result is a level of sustained political street warfare not seen in the U.S. since the 1960s. In the 1965, Herbert Marcuse defined, in the book A Critique of Pure Tolerance, the justification and the moral authority for violent protests in the USA. The book is a must read and a precursor for the Antifa and the actions we have seen since the election. It rationalizes the use of violence by attempting to deconstruct the idea of universal tolerance. In other words, it is ok to be intolerant of what you don't believe in as long as the idea was derived by rational thought, not value preference. In terms of historical function there is a difference between revolutionary and reactionary violence, between violence practiced by the oppressed and by the oppressors. Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right, and toleration of movements from the Left... They would include the withdrawal of toleration of speech and assembly from groups and movements which promote aggressive policies, armament, chauvinism, discrimination on the grounds of race and religion, or which oppose the extension of public services, social security, medical care, etc. Moreover, the restoration of freedom of thought may necessitate new and rigid restrictions on teachings and practices in the educational institutions. We see the change in the educational system. 'Tolerance' is given to the oppressed minority. Guilt is assigned to the racial majority. War is fought on the streets against Alt Right groups. And the extremists in the alt right groups are more than happy to oblige. It is a simple fact that the Left hates as much as the Right hates. Moderates like me sit back and watch the country devolve and make notes of who the idiots are.
