I think you see the point clearly, Sourdough. Yes, glaciers advance and retreat over time due to global temperature change. Right now, 90 percent of the glaciers in the world are retreating and sea level is rising, which is proof that global warming is happening right now.

People can argue that man is not responsible, but it is undeniable that global warming is actually occurring.

Thank you. I agree. Watched NOVA last night where they were talking about the glaciers. It was pretty cool and they said global warming was causing it. But they didn't not go on and on about man causing it and how we have to shut down factories either.

From what I saw, global warming is happening and it may be part of a 10 or 20 year trend or it may not be. They said usually after a warming trend, a serious cooling trend happens and has been happening for millions of years.

Glacier retreatign was happening because the melting water was actually flowing under the glacier, lifting it and moving it. Cool stuff.

I also have thought many times about forest fires and volcanos.
Have you ever thought about the heat and smoke that is generated as
well as the affect that has in the atmosphere?
I am talking about natural events here only.
I pretty much know about glaciers and stuff from living in Alaska and seeing
it all first hand as well as Alaska Videos.
Back in 1994 there were still a few glaciers growing instead of retreating which I doubt is still there.

When I was a kid I lived in Alaska for a few years also.
Bottomline is that I could not believe the difference when I saw Matanuska
Glacier in 1976 compared to 1993.

like red and sourdough said, i think we can all agree that there is warming, at least in some places, probably in more places than are cooling.

and also none of us would dispute that there have been times in the past when warming and cooling occured.

and i wouldnt argue that, i only point out that i think people are too eager to draw a conclusion where there isnt one easily available. and i think the media is eager to paint the story in a more alarmist tone, regardless of the topic. and that people in general often tend to want to believe sensationalist points of view. and i think the scienctific community has been somewhat misrepresented by the media, and the media has done a disservice to science by continiung to present things as if it is a foregone conclusion. but that makes sense, because many people go into reporting because they see themselves as a heroic exposer of the truth and catalyst for change for the better.

and i am not some slave of the right and their take on science. nobody is more opposed to bush and the right on issues like intelligent design or stem cells or whatever than i am.

there is a particular sort of problem that is very hard to answer, and that is when something is happening and you are not sure why and it could be many many things and it isnt possible to remove various factors and run control experiments. and without perfect simulations, you are just guessing.

and to some extent, i think man is self-important and they like to believe they are a factor in everything, and some people like to always blame evil man when he is destroying precious mother earth, as if we are some special part of earth that isnt as holy as the rest. and of course there is no shortage of people who want the personality and political mileage they get out of caring.

so as far as man causing the current climate, i am unconvinced.

But, if humans are having an adverse effect on the planet, I would suggest we concentrate on taking remedial measures in China. Their farts put more gases in the atmosphere than American industrial facilities do.

This is likely true, but media sensationalism doesn't obviate the underlying scientific conclusions.

We live in a real world, mahtin. There are no perfect simulations in any science, of course. This does not prevent us from drawing conclusions based on the evidence that does exist. I urge you to consider that there is a major difference between a scientific postulate and a wild-ass guess.

But you are beginning to accept that man has influenced climate, are you not?

your chart indicates that c02 levels are rising. i dont dispute that. that isnt the same as saying man is making the earth hotter. in fact there is a hell of a leap in knowledge between those two things.

how do we know what the CO2 levels were in the atmosphere in 1750?

ice core samples apparently are a wealth of information.
