Found out about your site from BuckeyePlanet. Pretty excited about the matchup against a championship team in your Tigers. One thing I always wanted to know is how two teams in the same conference came up with the nickname Tigers, and who had it first. Also, when I checked the stats on ESPN, I noticed Doucet wasn't at the top of receiving. Was he hurt this year? He was a stud in HS. Finally, which QB will get the most playing time in the game? Here's to a great game, hopefully we can make it one after last year's stinker!
Doucet missed 5 games with a groin injury. I don't know who between us and those other guys came up with Tigers. Our nickname comes from a Civil War regimen who had the reputation of fighting with ferocity of a Tiger. Those other guys are WarEagle Plainsmen Tigers Who Knows What They're Going By This Week.
Depending on how Matt Flynn's injury has healed at that point will determine who gets more playing time between he and Ryan Perriloux. There was talk about Flynn needing surgery on his shoulder, something I think he will get done once the seson is over. If Flynn is 100% for the NC, I see him probably getting 75-80% of the snaps.
LSU and Auburn aren't the only two SEC schools with the same nickname -- Mississippi State and Georgia are both the Bulldogs. The reason LSU is the Tigers -- Our first football teams began playing in the 1890's. At the time, the president of LSU (David Boyd) was an ex-Major in the Confederate Army. He had fought alongside the Louisiana men in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, who were known as "the Tigers." So it was an appropriate nickname for our Louisiana boys who led us in battle on the gridiron. The reason Auburn is the Tigers -- The name "Auburn" itself name comes from a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village," published in May 1770. The line, describing a fictitious town reads: "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the Plain." The nickname "Tigers" comes from another line in the poem: "where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey...." How gay is that? The weird thing about Auburn is that they have a live animal mascot, but its not a tiger, instead it's an eagle named "Tiger" (I know it's weird, but I promise you it's true). And instead of saying "Geaux Tigers!" like at LSU, or "Roll Tide" like at Alabama, Auburn's thing is "War Eagle" (or "War Damn Eagle"). As for LSU, we have had a live tiger ever since 1935. His name is Mike the Tiger.
What's the record for longest thread on TigerForums? With 34 gd, mf'in, sb'in, days to go, this thread is going to be HUGE!
It's not the official game thread though. Cause, you know, official is not in the title and all.... We'll see that one sometime shortly after the BCS games.
and just so everyone knows, it's only officia when GRAD says its official. we tried other things before. it didn't work.
