Pretty bad Aubie QB, nah. One still learning the ropes yes. But that team is loaded with exceptional talent due to several great recruiting classes. We lost to a bunch of Auburn teams with the same or less talent. So I'll take the win and be very happy.
This 3-9 team last year has a shot at winning 7-8 games this year. They will be a better team later in the year. Not too bad now.
Izzy...I don't know why you feel you have to qualify the win like that. We beat them by two TDs, and believe it or not, they were 3-0 at the time with a win over a middle-tier SEC team under their belts. Not too shabby. I think that score could probably have been whatever we wanted it to be. It just so happened that our coaching staff wanted it to be just comfortable enough.
Fair enough. You've convinced me, it's a really solid win. I would like to believe our defense played so well that it made a decent Auburn offense look really feeble for much of the game. I am spoiled from previous years of having dominating D-linemen take over games. We don't have that now. And it worries me we don't really have that identity from previous years. It looks more like we have a complementary defense of a decent but not great pass rush, and good but not great pass coverage. If you're pretty good on both ends, you can tie them together to become a fairly formidable defense. I think that's how it will pan out this season. My fear is that we are soft up the middle (even with Freak and Ego) and it will be exploited. I hope those fears are dispelled. I think we can all agree, we finally get to see how good our defense is this Saturday. Freak and Ego coming up big would be the difference.
I think what happened against Auburn was this: Freago both got double-teamed, leaving only Welter in the middle, who was for whatever reason content to let the runner come to him, rather than attacking. The other two LB's were playing gap discipline and looking out for Marshall on the edges, so they were pretty much out of the play by design. It seemed that LSU was content to give up those middle yards in return for preventing the long sideline run...especially in the fourth quarter when they were just trying to keep the clock running. Against UGA, our LB's only have to key in on Gurley, and our DE's only need to pin their ears back and get to Murray. The only thing that worries me about this weekend is their passing game. I expect to see a LOT of the Mustang package with that new guy...Thomas?...in the nickel and Martin back at safety. White, Mills, Loston, Martin, and Thomas in the secondary should be just good enough to keep those bastids in check.
This wouldn't surprise me. Chief has been known to let the other team simply eat clock when we have a decent lead. It's weird, because this means letting them keep the ball and gain yards, but you can't deny the results. He did this against WV in '11 and it drove me nuckin' futs because I didn't understand it at the time. Even if the other team scores, not a huge deal because the game is now 5 minutes closer to ending and we're probably going to score again. Obviously, this approach hinges heavily on what our offense is doing.
Correct me if I am wrong, but part of why I think the LB's didn't "attack" was b/c of the read option AU runs. There shouldn't be a question when playing UGA other than the play action pass.
This is an absurdly insane line of thinking. That's never been done in the history of organized football. Plus you're more likely to get injured if you were purposely playing at a less than 100 % effort.
