The majority of France's people oppose military intervention. France is acting in what they believe is their national interests. That's the way democracy and international relations work. Of course, I would argue to the French leaders and people that it is in their best interests to maintain the U.S./French partnership and a united front in NATO and UN, and that being obstructionist on this because they have the oil contracts now just ain't worth it. I know France has other sources of oil they can rely upon besides Iraq. And the sanctions are still in effect, so how much are they really getting out of Iraq? I think mostly the Chirac govt. wants to conceal just how much they were and are involved with Hussein's weapons programs. That, and France wants to be a superpower and be able to stop the U.S. from doing something it wants (fat chance of that. France a superpower? Silly frogs!)
