I'm not worried about our defense. It's our offense vs. Bama's defense that the game will hinge on. I hope we can run. I expect Bama's kicking game to mpact this to our advantage. What we do with the short fields is what will determine if we win or lose imo.

Great point by the OP actually.

I'm going to run some numbers on what I call "Defensive stats based on SOS"

Should be interesting to see who fares better between LSU and Alabama.

Well ... I disagree with you. I've watched every AR game this year, and Wilson and Co. are most deadly when they thow 10-20 yard slants and sideline routes, and post, where they get behind the linebackers. Most of their shorter passes are screens to the RBs comming out of the backfield when their sputtering run game ... well .. sputters. Sure, they do run some of the short slants, etc .... but the majority of their damage is done on the medium routes that get behind the LB group.

    Just my observation.

That would be the major challenge; hopefully LSU's playcalling outsmarts the Bama defense, and that the team stays put and execute despite being in Bama's backyard. It is also a test of how strong LSU's O-line is in QB protection and run blocking...

Would like to know how this year's Bama defense compares to last year's.

YEP! We are gonna need time of possession during our drives to give the D a break--even though our depth at D allows fresh subs--but we want TM7 in on as many D plays as possible, fresh 'n rarin' for the ball.

My back of the hand calculations based on averages ....

LSU's defense has faced 5 FBS teams, 4 excluding FL since we both played them .... average strength of offensive .... rank 52.5
    Current Ranks
    Oregon - 2
    MS - 78
    WVU - 12
    KY - 118

Bama has faced 6 FBS teams, 5 excluding FL, average strength, rank 86,
    Current Ranks
    Kent State - 119
    Penn State - 93
    North Texas - 103
    AR - 17
    Vandy - 98

In essense, we've played two teams that are currently ranked higher on offense than any team Bama has played. I mean look at the numbers ... offensive ranks of 119, 93, 103 and 98!!! ... come on' AR is the only decent offense on paper they've faced, and they are so one dimensional it hurts.

Our only dump games are KY and Northwestern [who's not even ranked]. Even MState is ranked higher than every team Bama has played accept AR.

Our offense has faced slightly stiffer defenses as well.

LSU opponents defense average rank is 47
Bama' opp. defenses avg. rank of 53

Make since that we put up more points against FL than Bama did, and didn't even try to max up the score. Add those 4 points back to Wings TD and the score was 45-11, compared to Bama's 38-10.

Granted, none of these are valid comparisons .... I'm just sayin'

Yeah .. we keep hearing the hype .. but really.

How good do you think the O-lines were of teams ranked 103, 119, 93 and 98. I"d venture to say, not to stout. And I'll Add .. while AR is ranked 17th in offense, their O-line abysmal. Poor ol Wilson is nothing short of a punching bag for every defense they've played. LSU currently is ranked 20th, and unlike AR, the offense is very balanced. We are leading the nation in pass protection with the least amount of sacks.

Sure we'll all find out come Nov 6th, but frankly, I'm not on the bandwagon that Bama is some sort of goliath. They simply have not played very good competition. While Bama was padding their numbers with likes of Penn State, Kent State, and Vandy, LSU has faced two out of conference ranked teams.

I think all of this is a bunch of hoopla surrounding the "myth" of Saban, who IMO, is nothing special. Saban is a good coach, but he is no god .. he is no football genius. Hell .. he couldn't even make it in the Pros. I'll take the Hat over Saban anytime.

When lee comes out and connects on his first few passes, like in the Mississippi state and Florida games, he's on for the night. When the receivers have the drops or he's off on his first few passes, uo and Kentucky , he has a poorer performance passing. It's extremely important that lee is allowed to get three or four high confidence completions to start the game. If lee is on fire we will beat bama. If the balls are droped , as in Kentucky , and lee starts to panic, we lose. We must get him into a groove where he is confident. That's the key.
