Multiple CFP trips. Multiple Heisman QBs in one year in the system. Regular top tier offenses. Starting to recruit top 5 classes in a relatively non-talented state. Pulls the top QBs in the country because they want to play for his system. It’s not easy going 12-0 or 11-1, even in the Big 12. And if you can point me to a coach whose team has never had a close win against a lesser opponent, I’m all ears.
Aranda, Riley & Tucker. I think we can’t go wrong with any of the three. When I saw the emotion in Aranda yesterday, he moved to the head of my list. Campbell and Napier are stretches as is Peterson. Absolutely don’t want Jimbo. He’s just a different version of Les. Same with Franklin. Hopefully Woodward makes the right decision. Interesting times.
when you think about blowing up and starting over, that narrows the list considerably will be interesting to see it play out. wondering where Woodward landed on the Ed/Aranda break and if those dynamics have a role….
When your team is head and shoulders above the rest, dominating a conference and making the CFB playoff isn’t an impossible achievement. If you’re offensive minded, it helps put your QB in the spotlight and even win awards. OU and their heismans comes back to earth in the playoff. Aranda got the better of their matchup with lesser players. If we go all in with Riley over Aranda, I think we’re picking the wrong guy.
Why is Campbell a stretch? He’s built a contender at Iowa St. If Iowa St beats OU… y’all sure Riley is the one you want? That said, I’d take him over Fisher, probably Napier, and most everyone else. I think I go Aranda, Campbell, Riley. There’s probably other people out there I’d consider that would break into that group. Probably Rhule before Riley.
It’s not impossible, but I think it’s been greatly underestimated just how hard it is to win their conference year in and year out even when competition is thin. And OU has put up points in all of their CFP appearances. Took Georgia to double OT in 2017, don’t forget. The defense needs to improve for sure, but Riley has been doing that, and with the talent we have here, he could easily pick a top tier DC and let the defense run itself. Aranda has had literally one year of success as a head coach and in a conference that you have pointed out has thin talent. I like him, but he’s riskier than Riley. And Riley has already proven himself. I don’t understand where this bias for the coach who goes from unknown to very good over the coach who oscillates between great and very good comes from.
My concern with Campbell is that he’s turned down opportunities to take job upgrades. He could be Kirk Frentz....a second tier guy reluctant to try the highest stage. Is he satisfied with being a permanent also ran? I like the thought of Matt Ruhle but would be surprised he is interested in leaving the NFL at this juncture.
