Great list! My 3 current favorites: Aranda Cristobal Fickell Not inane order, just would feel that we got a good one with any of these coaches. But, I'm probably wrong, but just giving it a shot. At first I had Aranda as a safer hire, but it's damn near impossible to argue his results in just 2 short years. Big game coming against Texas & he doesn't have the talent because they're Baylor. Would be a huge upset, even though his team is ranked. Plus every Defensive player in Louisiana knows him as a championship DC. Mel Tucker is interesting & may be a great coach, just very thin resume as a HC. Same with Aranda really. Difference is Aranda is known here.
The whole staff changed when Romero Crennel was fired and Mangini took over. That's pretty par for the course. The fact he's been hired by Nick Saban (3x), Romeo Crennel (Parcells and Belichick disciple), Jack Del Rio, Jim Tressel, Kirby Smart.. these are some really damn impressive defensive minds wanting him to run their defense. That speaks to me more than singling out a couple seasons here and there. Neither Romeo nor Trestman ever succeeded as head coaches even with other coordinators. It isn't like he was fired and the next guy every time made that defense he ran suddenly awesome. Marc Trestman hired him in Chicago and it was one of the last talented Bears rosters in quite some time. Older Julius Peppers one year and Jared Allen one year, Lance Briggs, Peanut Tillman one year.. pretty barren otherwise. By the way, Nick Saban was fired by the Cleveland Browns. He's played DB at Wisconsin, coached DBs his entire career, coordinated defenses, even interim took control of an NFL team, he's constantly being promoted since returning to college by Nick Saban and Kirby Smart. Those guys care about recruiting and defense. He checks their boxes. He has run defenses at Ohio State, bama, Georgia.. it's an impressive list.
