You are correct about the national outlook. Feeling is its a home run hire. We can't have it both ways: knock on the young un proven coaches out there, request a big fish hire, then gripe about the big fish hire and then say we'll regret not taking the young hungry guy. The safest bet is Kelly and national pundits seem to agree. He may flop and so may Napier at UF, but odds are better that Kelly succeeds given his coaching record. I think it was a safe, very solid hire.
At the risk of being tared and feathered (virtually of course) I don't see this as catastrophic news. Especially if he brings Freeman with him - WHO by the way is the #3 ranked recruiter behind only Kelley from Bama and Addae from Georgia. Lets see if he can push our class back into the top 10 or 5. Kelley has lost the same number of games in the last 4 years at ND as we have this year alone. Stealing ND's coach does make a positive statement, nationally. We need that right now. Is it a sexy hire? No. Is it a program stabilizing hire - good chance. And we also need a little of that now.
And change up a game plan the second time you play a team you didn't even score a TD against the first time you played.
