Austin is very reasonable unless you want to live within 10 miles of downtown. We had a condo that was 8 miles N from downtown and we sold it for about $160/sqft and bought a house 18 miles NW from downtown for about $100/sqft in a great community. It's a 25-40 minute commute depending on traffic, but we live in the Hill Country by the lake and the area is beautiful. Plus, I'm an Systems Admin not a developer - I tried to stay in state when I graduated (2007) but I didn't find anything that paid decently - most of them wanted to pay low 40s for a Sys Admin with 6 years experience and a degree (and even those were hard to find). My wife's dream job is to work for the Army Corps of Engineers in SE Louisiana. If/when she's able to land that gig then we will probably start to look in BR and NO and I hope that there will be some decent opportunities for me as well.
Holding basic civic services hostage with a pet project in a bond measure, for the second time, is nothing short of shameful. Holden has wasted the city's time and money with this garbage measure. Hopefully someone who is a serious civic leader will step forward and defeat Kip in the next election. What a shame Kip wasted so much good will of the people of Baton Rouge.
All the risk was on the public. Audubon doesn't even make a profit in New Orleans. If there is potential for profits, then let a private developer take it on. If none will, it's got potential to be a dog like Catfish town. Knoxville isn't a hour away from New Orleans which already has an Aquarium, a Zoo, an iMax, The French Quarter, streetcars, restaurants, and all those tourists.
No, health care reform is manna from heaven sent down to us from the chosen one that lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
