Simple solution. Don't influence the government to fight the religion legally, it gets in the way of the Constitution and starts a slippery slope. Citizens must fight the ground zero mosque morally and economically. Make it a huge divisive issue for American muslims. Make it a bellweather issue for Islamic insensitivity. Embarass the 7 million muslims that live here, like it, and don't want to rock the boat. The mosque will lose support. Opponents should make Saudi Arabia so embarrassed about the mosque that it will never consider funding it. Opponents should promise to make it a permanent protest site and put their money where their mouth is to buy adjacent properties to house a permanent ugly protest. A religion should be able to build a church anywhere in the country legally, but they should be influenced to find some less hallowed ground for this particular mosque.
To those who oppose this mosque... what is the point of freedom if it only protects the stuff we like or think is in good taste? Isn't it the stuff we hate that needs protecting? There is beautiful irony in this whole mosque squabble.
You are correct, sort of. I don't think anyone is against building the mosque, they just don't want it built "there". We are and should be free to practice the religion of our choosing and I don't think that is being attacked here, it is IMO wrong to put the mosque there, a trophy for the muslims and a slap in the face of the United States. I fear not because even if they build it I know there will be someone crazy enough to blow it up, burn it down, turn loose a shytload of termites inside of it or something else to get rid of it. Especially in NYC.
Why is it not a bigger slap in the face to them? We are a place so free and so awesome that even things that most people hate and find reprehensible are protected. I get that this is a trophy for Islam, and they think they are pulling one over on us. So what. We win by not changing the way we do things. No right to not be offended exists when it comes to people practicing their freedoms. That is all these dudes are doing. And New York is right to let them .
The premise of your statement is true but allow me to elaborate on it for just a bit. I really don't care if it is a slap in their face nor do I care about the magnitude of said slap. I simply do not like them. Right, wrong, or indifferent I just don't like em. In the big picture it will not affect my life any as I do not live in NYC, I guess it means a bit more to them because of proximity but in the end they did attack us. Sure we win by not changing the way we do things, but that doesn't mean we have to allow them to build a terrorist HQ in the space they created with their acts of cowardess. Like I said, let em build it, some black helicopter dude will take care of it for the rest of us.
Huh? Where did I say any of that? I said I don't "like" them. I never said they couldn't be muslim, just that I don't have to like it. I didn't say they can't build their little rub and tug, I just don't agree with their choice of location. I didn't say I was going to blow up the mosque just that someone will (probably) I never said it was right for them to do so, only that I thought it would happen. Maybe you should work for msnbc?
