any substance can be abused. some people can get hooked on anything, including the legal alcohol. some people can use substances such as alcohol or marijuana recreationally and moderately without addiction.

i have never known anyone that smoked cigarettes that didnt have hell quitting. that is if they were able to quit at all. how many old people toting thier oxygen tanks have you seen that had to temp turn them off so they could suck their cigs? (i have seen plenty.) think they arent flat out addicted?

point is, many substances are both legal and illegal can be abused or not. "illegal" drugs are far from the only addictive substances out there.

Interesting read from the Washington Post.

    Study Finds No Cancer-Marijuana Connection

"The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.
The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."
Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought"

I understand Bengal Buddy's point about the end result of using narcotics. You can drink a beer without getting drunk. You can drink a cup of coffee without getting hopped up. The only reason to smoke a reefer is to get a buzz. He is saying that constitutes abuse. I agree. I just don't care. People should be able to put whatever they want into their bodies for whatever reason they want.

So is it abuse to drink a beer in order to get a buzz? Is it abuse to have a double shot of espresso to stay awake?

    I agree.

I think drinking for the sole purpose of getting drunk would be abuse.

What about for a buzz? Is that abuse?

Side rant... Abuse means to misuse. As far as I am concerned, the point of alcohol is to get me drunk. The point of caffeine is to get me active. The point of pot is to get me high. There's no misuse in using a substance for it's purpose.
