These black guys certainly weren't hung to death, nor where they ever specifically threatened and there was never any indication that their lives were in danger. That doesn't change the fact that they broke the law. I understand fights - they happen. I really could care less about this case except as far as the hate laws & the racist black "leaders" are concerned.
This is a classic case of issues being muddied. The black community is trying to be heard regarding issues that lie outside this particular fact pattern. Racial inequality in the criminal justice system remains prevalent, and it's not surprising that many in the black community are seeking to voice their opinions on that topic. Unfortunately, their credibility is lessened when they use a case like this as a talking point.
you do realize what hanging a noose in a tree means? of course, i guess you can always argue "well, we dont know what the hangers were thinking", and youd be right but thats stupid. because of history, it reasonable for blacks to interpret hanging nooses as a threat of death. basically, the fbi says it was a hate crime, but it wasnt pursued because of a lack of history of the perps. i guess i dont understand your post. i think the 6 (at least bell) should go to jail, the noose-hangers should not go to jail, and the protest is inappropriate.
amen. they are now distilled into a community of knee-jerk activists. while racism will always exist (and shouldnt be illegal in itself anyway) institutionalized racism is rare. the black community would be better served joining other poor communities and fighting against poverty, bad health care and bad education. its all class now, not race.
there is a difference between the fear generated by a sign on the wall at auschwitz that says "you are scheduled for being cooked in the ovens tonight" and a dumb high school kid with a brady quinn haircut hanging a noose on a tree. at some point people need to man up and wait until the punches are thrown to get concerned.
The newspaper says David Bowie just sent $10,000 to help in their defense. I wonder how much will be taken up for this and how much will actually get to those families. If they get a lot of "help", can they still use a court appointed lawyer?
