As far as the media is concerned, we get whatever information it wants us to have. Nothing more, nothing less. Thus how can any of us know the actual facts that are close to the situation? Legal proceedings have been going on for SEVEN YEARS. I have enough confidence in the legal system to believe that due process has been observed in properly determining the facts in this particular issue. At least Fox and CNN have millions of people glued to their tv's watching the coverage of this. Their advertisers/sponsors must love it.
War in Iraq? Anti-Bush? I can say the same thing about Michael Shaivo and his side. Amazing, disputible information and someone dying and thats the best you can do? http://www.ryansreach.com/home1.htm
You lost me here. Do you not think the courts have gone through this information time and time again? The best I can do is give my opinion and thoughts. Yes, that is indeed the absolute best I can do.
None of us may ever know the husband's motive. I have no clue why he wouldn't just walk away and give custody to the parents. Then again, as LSUGrad said, he may truly believe that is Terri's wish and he is only doing what she would want him to do. As I said in an earlier post, it's a slippery slope we are on to examine the motives of the spouse in these cases. This happens frequently in our country and I don't think this is the road we want to travel. As for the media, sadly it's nothing but a news story to many of them. It's about ratings. It's interesting how some thought the media had an agenda covering the Iraq war and the presidential elections, but now they believe they are somehow covering this case objectively and fairly with no agenda. I'm a Fox news watcher and, IMO, they have an agenda in this case ... they are a conservative, pro-republican network and they are supporting their position. I normally like that to offset all those liberal news outlet, but it was sickening to watch Hannity the last few nights. Anyone who takes what they hear in the media, from any source, as fact is awfully naive. The doctor (Sanjay something or other?) who is on CNN regularly seems to be one of the few objective people talking about this case. It's hard to imagine that all the federal and state courts are wrong on this case over the last 7 years. Maybe they should appoint a panel of independent doctors to review Terri's medical condition. But if they found Terri to be in a vegetative state, it still won't reslove the issue of the custody battle and whether or not to remove the the feeding tube. Something tells me the parents would still want to keep Terri alive. Guess I'm back to my original position ... it's the spouse's decision.
About a million lawyers are going to get rich on lawsuits in the next few years, I'm afraid. All trying to make a test case for euthenasia or the civil rights of persistant vegetative state citizens or the right for elected officials to kidnap family members for political reasons. Sheesh. Fellers, don't put your families through this. Make a living will for yourself. Your loved ones should, too. Call your shyster, or go online for info, will forms, and actual legal services. It's definitely on my agenda for next week. The Living Will: Guide to Health Care Decision Making U.S. Living Will Registry LegalDocs.com -- Living Will, Louisiana
Terri isn't in a persistant vegetative state, there is a dispute here and 1 judge is the whole reason for this quagmire. The other judges are going to take the side of this 1 judge because thats the way it is. Sadly our whole system needs and everything about this case needs to be reviewed. The American system and its judicial system has failed every American in this country. What should happen when a dispute happens? Disabled Americans better watch out!
I don't really understand why the conservatives, the party of personal responsibility are championing Terri Schiavo's right to life on this instance. There are absolutely no parallels to the abortion/pro-choice issue. The law is extremely clear on this and that the husband has a responsibility to do what he feels were Terri's wishes. My wife and I were discussing it yesterday and we both agree not to remain on life support if diagnosed as a vegetable. Should we go get living wills and such or will the law allow either of us to make that decision?
These videos that you have seen that have her laughing and smiling or whatever... how old are they? Are they from 1990? How can you prove their age? What is the tally on number of doctors that have diagnosed her as a vegetable vs those that haven't?
I'm amazed that the "less government" proponents are the ones trying to get congress, the governor, and the legislature to bypass the judicial system to intervene in a family matter. Big Brother is watching. The Schiavos did not get living wills and look what has happened. The best bet is to get them, then there is no question of what your wishes are.
