LSU lineman McGill gets misdemeanor summons

LSU Police issued a misdemeanor summons Sunday morning to LSU offensive lineman Terrell McGill for his part in a fight that occurred on campus over the weekend.
LSU Police Maj. Mark Shaw said McGill is accused of punching David Keney, who is not an LSU student, in the face while in a common area of West Campus Apartments. The apartments are home to many LSU student-athletes.

Keney, who was hit once, was not seriously injured, Shaw said. Paramedics treated him at the scene.

Shaw said police received conflicting accounts from the men involved in the fight and several witnesses of what caused the incident and who instigated it. McGill ended up receiving a summons for simple battery.

"It's for the court to decide who was the aggressor and whether the charge will be substantiated, but we did have probable cause to issue a summons," Shaw said.

LSU coach Nick Saban said Tuesday he didn't have all the details but believed that McGill and other football players may have been trying to break up a fight.

"Two groups of non-(LSU) students were getting into a fight where our players live," Saban said. "I think our guys were trying to break up a fight, someone hit him (McGill) and he hit back."

A junior from Miami, McGill (6-foot-3, 325 pounds) played in 11 of 14 games last year in a backup role for the BCS national champions. McGill goes into the fall competing with Brian Johnson for the starting job at right guard.

This is the first fight involving an LSU football player since June 2001. Such incidents have been rare since Saban became coach in November 1999.

"We try to create a culture of peer intervention, and it's worked very well for us for the most part," Saban said.

"Quite frankly, this is strictly a media issue trying to make something out of something that isn't very much to begin with."

    Let's talk English then, Hub...

How about capitalizing every word of your first sentence? Since when it excellent capitalized in the middle of a sentence? I'd love to hear you cite some MLA guidelines that would support your fast and loose capitalization skills.

Second(ly, I think you mean), you didn't get your lip split for no fault of your own in Tigerland one time in college. You got your lip split through no fault of your own. Third(ly), you don't recall pressing any charges (insert comma where you left one out here), but (,) then again(,) the person that hit you wasn't a(n) LSU Football player. Damn pansy...

We appreciate that English lesson, Hub...Feel free to do some more damage anytime you're ready.

“Two groups of people that are non-students got in a fight where our players live,” he said. “Basically, I don’t know all the details, but I think our players were trying to be good guys in trying to break up a fight.

Somebody hit one of our players, and he (McGill) hit him back.

So now we have a big incident over this, and I’m sorry that this is an incident.”

McGill ain't going anywhere. Discipline and probation. Lessons Learned.
