Clock supposedly tied to the ref's whistle and there is a question as to whether there was in inadvertent whistle. But the refs were able to look at a very clear replay which showed that the game should have been labeled as being "over". It wasn't. Shame on the refs ultimately.
Funniest quote from a Tennessee board after the game: I guess that means you win more than 7 if you cheat?
How many remember a Dale Brown Team playing Tennessee and the game ended about the same way. We took the lead with eight seconds left in the game. Tennessee leisurly took the ball in and slowly dribled down court. The clock never started until he passed the centerline. They finally got a shot off and missed. The tip in at the buzzer was good. Immediately there was a protest. Don Devoe, the Tennessee coach, rushed his team to get their stuff and get on the bus. Despite the fact that the game was televised and clearly showed the clock was in error the officials declared the game over.
So basically, you have a close home game, that goes down to the wire...You have the ability to Cheat the other team out of a chance to win the game. It was clearly a obvious move by the Tennessee clock operator. This is why you should have one other outside official running the clock.
That's fine but if this were the case, who the hell ever heard of getting two free throws due to an inadvertent whistle. I heard this too and think this explanation is a smoke screen. Tennessee's clock operator stole the game.
In the paper this morning, everyone is acknowleging the clock delay but saying nothing will be done about it. There is an official who controls the clock as well as a sensor on the refs whistle. Either of those can stop the clock and the official timer can restart it. They say these timing errors occur from time to time but it's up to the officials on the court, especially in a close review at the end, to get it right. There are calls for the outcome of this game to be reversed. Tennessee must pay well. Viv Stringer will have an anouncement later today.
