Ainge is the clear number one, with Claussen a distant second. Schaeffer broke his clavicle, and if I'm not mistaken, it was in his non-throwing shoulder. Schaeffer was cleared to play in February, but was not 100% going into spring drills, so his snaps were severely limited. He had been working out at slot receiver for a good portion of practices prior to the spring game, but was said to be unhappy about what he saw as being relegated to "the practice squad." In other words, he developed a sour attitude in his relationship with Randy Sanders. Schaeffer was already headed for CPF's doghouse before the arrest. According to a collegue close to the UT program, CPF was already under some reasonable heavy criticism due to the recent rise of disciplinary incidents dating back to the weeks leading up to the SECC. Schaffer is viewed by some as the scapegoat for a troubled Tennessee program.... Fulmer's way of sending a strong message to his backers. Given the myriad of other incidents that were much more "criminal" than the one committed by Schaeffer, one can only wonder if Schaeffer is indeed being singled out.
When did that happen? The Tennessean (Nashville) had Ainge and Clausen locked up with no clear cut winner.
You really need to read the Knoxville News. John Adams, LSU alum and ex-Advocate beat writer who was run out of town in the mid-80's, is the sports editor. He learned a lesson because the paper is all rah-rah Vols. In 2000 a few days before the OT win, one of the by-lines wrote how Tiger Stadium had been dead for years and was never coming back. The backlash crashed their server for days. This is truly one time Tennessee and Florida are 1-2: rag newspapers.
Schaeffer was cleared to play for the SECC, but some off the field trouble the week of the game kept him from playing. He also played in the Cotton Bowl, 1 for 4 11 yards, 3 rushes for 10 yards. Before he had his latest trouble Fulmer was liking what he was seeing from him. here is Video from one of Tenn Spring Scrimmages Tennessee
Adams didn't write the story, Gary Lundy did (I think he recently died). Adams, however, is a HUGE UT apologist.
That article also shows what folks thought about Nick Saban. We'd lost to UAB (thank you, Josh) and there was snickering at the hire. Fast forward to 2005, the same people are snickering about Les Miles. It won't take overtime in this go round to beat UT.
Don't forget Phil got that stud QB Jonathon Crompton coming in, who will probably be teh heir apparent to Ainge.
Where do people get the idea that Ainge is "clearly" #1? Clausen our-played him during the Spring game and Ainge is struggling with shoulder pain. Clausen is #1 right now
So what's your point? Shaeffer is only a Sophomore and was still productive last year. What does he have to do with Crompton?
