Well, scientists were ridiculed by religious dogma, for sure. My point was that one dissenting voice did not invalidate the concensus overnight. It had to be proven first, and that took many years and many people working to prove or disprove it. Most dissenting voices never actually prove their thesis, you know.

Actually I have said several times that scientific dissent is valuable to science. Valid criticism is worthy of further investigation. It is some bloggers political rhetoric and many anecdotal notions about global waming that I write off as BS.

I have an unproven thesis that we get more argumentative in the off-season. Even without martin!

dude has a bit of a point.

the most obvious was "the earth is round", but thats not the same because it was the church holding him back

i know of two other examples where the scientific consensus was very slow in accepting research against the dogma---helicobacter as a causative agent of stomach ulcers and prions. granted, the community eventually acknowlegded each of these researchers with Nobel prizes, but they were marginalized for quite a while. i heard that the ulcer guy drank a culture of it to show it would give ulcers because peers wouldnt believe him (looking for ref, red.)

"they performed the initial culture of H. pylori and developed their hypothesis related to the bacterial cause of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.[2] It has been claimed that the H. pylori theory was ridiculed by the establishment scientists and doctors, who did not believe that any bacteria could live in the acidic stomach. Marshall has been quoted as saying in 1998 that "Everyone was against me, but I knew I was right".[4] On the other hand, it has also been argued that medical researchers showed a proper degree of skepticism until the H. pylori hypothesis could be proved.[5]

After failed attempts to infect piglets in 1984, Marshall drank a petri-dish of the bacteria and soon developed gastritis with achlorhydria. Symptoms included vague stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting and halitosis. On the 14th day of the infection, biopsies of Marshall's stomach did not reveal any bacteria - so spontaneous eradication may have occurred. However, on the insistence of his wife, he did take antibiotics immediately after that endoscopy so there was no way of double-checking the negative result. Interestingly, he did not develop antibodies to H.pylori, suggesting that innate immunity can sometimes eradicate acute H.pylori infection. His illness and recovery, based on a culture of organisms extracted from a patient, fulfilled Koch's postulates for H. pylori and gastritis, but not for peptic ulcer. "

OK Red, or is it "fuerrer" these days? I've held off on this long enough and it may even be posted in another thread but didn't really look.

I was wondering how long it was going to take you to call the guy that started to weather channel a "KooK"? He is making all sorts of noise saying that global warming is nothing but a hoax.

    Your retort sir...

How exactly is the American liberal keeping the multi-national oil company from drilling, building refineries, and power plants in the hundred other countries they operate in? Its a cop out.
