If they were white Christians from Sweden there would be almost zero chance that any of them would commit mass murder of innocent people in the name of Allah.
Right, he should take a few into his home if he likes them so much. Makes the mailbox thing that much easier
I can't understand how people miss the boat on this. I hear, "It's America. It's what our country was founded on. Our ancestors were immigrants." YES, they were...and they worked, and supported themselves. They Cleared land, built homes, farmed, hunted, and fed themselves. The government did not house them and feed them. Slam the fucking door shut. This is a dam shame way to feel but I'd prefer them being killed, by the ones they're fleeing, to us having to take from our own to support more than we already are. That's how much I've had it with this "no work" bullshit." And this is not a problem exclusive to any particular skin color. Hell, I am happy to know that Chicago streets are taking several hundred off of welfare on an annual basis. New Orleans chips in a couple hundred or so too. Every lil bit helps.
Or so you think. Don't you remember in 2011 when Anders Breivik murdered 77 people in a rampage at a church camp? If not, look it up for yourself. What about the guy who shot up Planned Parenthood recently or the guy in South Carolina who went into a church and started killing people. Those were not Muslims. My point is not to get into a pissing contest about religions but in trying to help you understand that these people are fleeing our enemies, who is also the enemy of the refugees, because they fear for their lives. I don't know if you read the recent article from The Atlantic entitled, What Isis Really Wants. If not, I highly suggest that you read it. It is an excellent insight into what motivates them. One of the things that struck me about the article is that Isis kills far more Muslims than they do any other religion. I guess to put into our terms it would be like the Pentecostals killing off ever other sect of Christianity because they believed they were so correct that they need to purify the Christian religions. That is essentially what Isis is trying to accomplish within their own territory. Further, they are purifying Islam for the sake of fighting what essentially amounts to their Armegeddon against Westerners. It is a really interesting read but it goes to the heart of why those refugees are fleeing their homes....they are deathly afraid for their lives and for their families. To put it into our terms Isis views the Koran in the most literal sense. Not to pick on Pentecostals, but it would be like Pentecostals interpretting the Bible so literally that they started stoning women who were caught in the act of adultery as the Old Testament teaches. It's insanity, plain and simple, and it must be dealt with on a lot of different fronts in order for us to be successful. One of those it not being afraid of the people who need our help to escape the very same people that we are hell bent on killing, and rightfully so.
You don't have to take my word for it, the last several presidential elections should be indication enough for you. If not, then just wait and see how badly the Donald gets trounced by Hillary next November and we can revisit this discussion if you like. The same demographics that have led to increasing margins in each recent presidential election have only increased. At the same time the base of the Republican party has steadily turned off voting bloc after voting bloc. I probably need to start another thread about the primaries and election.
You know Shane, I'm glad you posted this because it goes right to the heart of what I've been thinking ever since this whole controversy erupted about the refugees. What in the hell of you so afraid of? For being the crowd that likes to brag about your arsenal of weaponry and all the tough talk, you guys sure do run and hide when the going gets tough, huh? I mean, you are afraid of people who have no home, who have no possessions, who barely have clothes on their backs or shoes on their feet.....who must endure a two year vetting process before they are allowed to set foot on American soil. Again, what is so damn frightening about them? Furthermore, conservatives (not necessarily you) are supposedly the crowd that are Christians and go to church. I've read enough of Jesus' words to know that if the question were put to him whether we should help those in need, he'd say yes. What does it say about us if we compromise our values in the face of potential danger. You've served so I know you are not a coward and I'm not calling you one. I respect your service regardless of what I think of your politics. That said, why is everyone so quick to compromise who we are because of fear?
And likewise Tiga, I shake my head and wonder what it means that too many people in this country are willing to sacrifice the basic tenets of our freedoms because we are too afraid of a lone wolf attack from a refugee. It certainly doesn't speak to our exceptionalism and smacks of that kid who'd walk two blocks out of his way to avoid facing the bully. There might be a lone wolf terrorist among them.....and if that lone wolf is stupid enough to go through a two year vetting process to gain access to the country then, good Lord, they are probably the dumbest damned terrorist in the history of mankind because everybody and there are plenty of easier ways. How do you know that these people will not work? How do you know that they will not contribute to our society in some way? I would imagine many of them will go back to their homes once the are able to do so. I agree with you that everyone should pay their way who is physically capable of doing so and I hate a damn free ride as much as you. But I also think I know you well enough that you don't mind helping people who are in need. You don't strike me as the type to turn away someone who needs assistance. Why is this different?
