If nothing else, the Dome and the Convention Center may come to symbolize all that went wrong. Going forward, both of these two places (assuming the dome survives) should receive a considerable makeover, such that no one has that feeling of being in the same place they saw constantly on TV. The buildings would essentially look the same, but the elements where people come into contact should be redone. You don't want a visitor saying, "Gosh, that looks like the spot CNN kept showing where the old man sat dead in a chair." Or, "Isn't this the same concourse where they were getting attacked."
i would love to see the superdome demolished and rebuilt with a more modern design that sort of reminds you of the old one. the mets are considering doing this with their stadium, making it look sort of like ebbets field. and maybe new orleans will sort of shrink as a city, because of the risk of a hurricane, but will retain its charm as sort of a smaller version of itself. like a huge key west.
martin advocates the government build a stadium for a private organization! Aren't you the less-government guy? Other NFL teams have built their own stadiums. Why not the Saints? Why should Louisiana pay for a very expensive stadium when they haven't even finished paying off the bonds that built the Superdome? Especialy when the Saints owner may pack up and leave at any time. What would we do wih the place then?
when did i say the government should do anything? i didnt discuss who should fund it. i dunno what you are talking about.
The official position of the NFL is that they do not want the saints to move because they would lose a large area of customers. They prefer that a team like Indy or Cleveland (both of which are having financial troubles and want new stadiums) moves to L.A. because their areas are still covered by other teams. If the saints get a new stadium out of this, the NFL will make them stick around for a while...
What you say is valid in alot of ways. However, NOLA is the gateway to the interior USA for shipping. Further upstream cant handle the large ocean going ships-- the river channel is not deep enough. The only thing that makes Morgan City "the spot" is if the MISS river ever cuts off and runs into the Atchafalaya; which it has been trying to do for years. Our analyst say NOLA has to be rebuilt, will be rebuilt and 100 Billion will be the price tag. This figure will be good for both NOLA and LA as a whole.
Prediction: Benson will milk the situation for the maximum emotional value nationwide, make a large contribution to "rebuild" the city, and tearfully announce that he is moving the team after the season. The "buyer" will make a big contribution to the state (85M?) to shut everyone up. Did you notice today that the Saints said that season ticket holders could "apply" for a refund? Well I can "apply" for a date with Jessica Simpson, but it's not too likely to happen.
