no its not the same thing.

lets see laws i like, murder , battery, assault, drunk driving, actual theft, rape, child molestation, child neglect, laws that are actually important, not bullsh!t laws that were just made to appease corporations.

dope, haven't heard it called that in a long time, you sound like my grandfather, "you damn doper".

I listen to mostly unsigned or small label bands. I am almost forced to steal their music. I tried to buy a an old album from a band called Small Brown Bike. I could not find it on the internet, itunes, or music shops. I found it in about three seconds on soulseek.

I don't lose sleep over downloading stuff I can't find.

When I want something from a major label artist I buy it.

That is accurate except when it collides with other law. This does not apply to DVDs. DVDs fall under a different description because of CSS (copy protection). The DMCA specifically bans (makes illegal) software that is designed to circumvent copy protections. So with the "ban" on software that can backup a DVD, you can not exercise your rights to make an archive copy of you DVD collection.

i havent bought a cd in many years. i dont want it. what would i do with a piece of plastic? all my music is is on my ipod and computer. the only music i buy is on vinyl, thats how classy i am.

also, red has charged me with theivery and i plead guilty. lord have mercy do i have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stolen material.

i steal movies too, but i also spend my weekly 12.5 dollars on a movie ticket. and i will never stop going to the theater. i like the experience. i feel like that is something worth purchasing.

Have any of you seen Rip: A Remix Manifesto?
it's free to see: RIP: A Remix Manifesto

If focuses on girltalk and his use of other artist's music to create his mash-ups, but within that it shows how lots of music made today plays off of music already done in the past and how the future always builds on the past. I agree that there are lots of artists out there today that are making royalties off of music they say they created, but it really is based on someone else's music and that someone else isn't getting paid for it. So if the true pioneer isn't get paid for it, why should the current one?

I also have to say that I think the quality of music would IMPROVE if the record industry wasn't what it is...plenty of artists are putting out crap just b/c they know you'll buy it. And they know it's crap, they even admit it sometimes. If there was no industry push behind it, then they would know that it had to be good if it was going to make it big.

That's just not true Red. They may find another means to make a living, but truly creative people can't stop creating. It just happens.
