Point # 1 i was talking about music cds.
I always thought and assumed that music cds you buy from the store are copy protected?

I claim ignorance about this because I honestly didn't know.
I just see the problem it creates when its so easy to rip cd's to a hard drive.
No wonder mp3 sharing happens, I honestly knew mp 3's were out there for a number of years but I never ripped any of my cds until I discovered it once
    I got an mp3 player.
I figured microsoft was also a problem in this case.

Exactly, I bought the dvd to the wall and smokey and the bandit.
Instead of buying the audio soundtracks or cds I made my own.
What is the purpose of buying them when I already own the dvd version which is the same as the cd version?
It wouldn't have been smart financially to purchase the cd version.

I couldn't agree more, I've seen movies in psp version at the store.
You have made my point just like I made with my audio cds vs the dvds.
If you already own the dvd formats it is absolutly insane for them to make you buy the movie all over again for another format.
Only a rich man such as Ted Kennedy or Rush Limbaugh could afford to buy all of their movie collections in various formats.
But I'm willing to bet not every rich man will do that either, they didn't get rich by spending money like Michael Jackson did.

Sooner or later the movie and music industry will have to realize that not everybody can afford to buy there movies for various formats.
I see a need somewhere for someone to come in and sell a one time price for a movie in various formats possibly so that you can watch your movies on your home dvd player as well as your psp or something like that.
That is if the industry wants to keep things legal.
It seems to me like the movie and music industries are lagging behind, they are still stuck in the 20th century before mp3, mp4 and psp players, etc.

no way i was gonna read the whole thread, so i'll take silence as an indication that this question was asked already.

what about music/vids at the library or on the radio/tv? can't i check out a cd and listen to it? and record it for my own use? can i give it to a friend? was it illegal for my dad to give me a vcr recording of the lsu game i missed the weekend b4?

i think perhaps all public libraries are criminal entities and should be banned and all librarians jailed.

You can read, watch or listen to something from the library but the minute you copy it you are breaking the law I believe.
Does that then make the library a participant in a crime?
I've always heard ignorance of the law is no excuse.
I don't know about radio or tv but people have been recording that stuff for personal use since those inventions were made.
I have a huge LSU collection of games so therefore I am a criminal.
    I guess but its illegal.
Please leave his name, address and phone number, I know someone that wants to talk to him.
That would probably go for any radio or tv transmission since the beginning of time.

harvard law school, who is as forward-thinking as i am, has weighed in again:

"We should be lobbying Congress for a roll back of the draconian copyright law that the copyright industry has forced upon us."

    http://www.law.harvard.edu/news/2007/05/01_nesson.php

the RIAA recently sent out a new bunch of "pre-litigation" statements to colleges, but they left harvard out, having already been advised to "take a hike" by harvard law professors.

i think sourdough is right about everything. although i think it is pretty clear that every person who borrows music at the library copies it. and i do not think that is morally wrong of them.

those information spreading bastards. clearly media companies would want library loaning banned if they believed it would help their profits to do so. that doesnt mean we should let them, because of the public good free information spread brings. what is right or wrong or smart for us as society isnt exactly aligned with what the riaa will push through congress if we allow them.

does this involve a modded xbox? nevermind do not answer that, spreading info that helps defeat copy protection is illegal. if you typed that out to me you would be a criminal.

anyways, i dont want to steal 360 games, these games are so impossibly complex that i feel fine about paying for them. some smart dude is in a cubicle somewhere coding his ass off for years so i can play these games. i can chip in for the poor guy.

yunno, i kinda wish they would go to an online distribution system for games. like steam does with half life, like xbox live arcade on a bigger scale. games could be cheaper because we wouldnt be paying our local game shop. again, i have no use for the old brick and mortar information distribution system.

EMI, one of the big 4 labels, has been doing copy-protection free music for a few months now through various digital stores like amazon and iTunes. And they have a huge catalog of big name artists that are available (the one exception is the beatles, due to the rumored remastered anthology thats soon to be released).

amazon has done this, and even without the ipod/itunes connection to drive sales of music, they have become huge by selling drm free music.
