And what point would that be? That admission standards should conform to football recruiting? Schools can set whatever standards they wish.
The problem is that they're apparently not giving Spurrier clear guidance on what the rules are. That is, if you believe Spurrier. He's going out and telling these kids what they need to be doing to get qualified, and then the school comes behind him and changes it up on him. At least, that's what I guess is happening.
They just need to get on the same page and not be making news like this. I'm sure there's lots of drama going on over there right now.
At first, after reading the article, I found myself sorta siding with Spurrier--but after reading your post, I'm changing my tune. You're right, gumborue, just because students don't qualify for admission doesn't mean you (any coach) lied to them--unless of course, the true story is that if he told them, I don't know, that they could gain entry with a 2.0 gpa when it was never that to begin with. IMO, Spurrier shouldn't blast the school like that because if those two players really wanted to play for him, they would simply enroll in a military prep school for a year, meet their requirements and resign next season and still have 5 years to compete for 4 like everyone else; like Keiland Williams did with us and what DeAngelo Benton is currently doing. No need for Spurrier to sour those kids' taste for wanting to play for South Carolina by making them feel that they were "wronged" intitionally. Because as it stands right now, even though the majority of the fans will accept it without much fight, you always hear the phrase, "Well, it's bad enough that my child can make a 26 on the ACT and not get in, but this kid makes an 18 and because he can play sports, he/she gets in." Spurrier should have just kept his mouth shut.
I have to disagree with you... Fulmer, for example, has used this type of information to scare recruits away from his competition. If a coach tells a player that they are guaranteed a scholarship if they qualify for admission under NCAA standards, and then they ask Spurrier if they have the same offer, Spurrier has to reply with, "NO," you have to meet the USC requirements as well. Sand Hill region recruits will all be going to Clemson or Tennessee. Count on it!
yes, but he's too savvy and experienced to think this just happened. he did this on purpose--as he has done in past years and won. he oversigned and if they got in--good, they greyshirt. if they are rejected then he uses that against the admin to pressure them to lower standards.
This comes as no shock to me, personally. Having dealt with "Bow Tie Andy," and knowing how he values the academic side of a school while despising the athletic sides of school's programs it is simply a case of Sorenson's MO. I remember when I was invited to join Cockytalk.com when it was first launched and had a discussion about Sorenson. One of my fore-warnings was along the lines of "the staff and the Pres will butt heads. It isn't a matter of if, but a matter of when." I find the title to the thread misleading, but it very well could be true if it were labeled, "Sorenson leaving South Carolina?" I'd bet he'll be the one to go before Spurrier.
Michael Grant actually ended up at Arkansas and Cheney ended up at Mississippi State. Carlos Brown was also recruited by Georgia and then was advised that he couldn't pass the 'conduct' background review before he was offered a scholarship. Carlos Brown ended up at Michigan.
