You know Beantown, you were among my favorites here before this! GO YANKS AND STROS! As for Spurrier...if there's anybody that can turn around USC, it's him. Who would want to go to Norman or Tallahassee or Gainesville, for that matter?
Spurrier is a genius .....he knows he needs a recruiting coordinator...next year he will have a top ten class and I agree they probably will be a spoiler but the year after that watch out of them...
USC would have been crazy to pass on Spurrier, your grandpaw needs to adjust his thinking IMO. The Spurrier not being a good recruiter thing is blown way out of proportion as well. His last 2 years at UF his classes weren't quite as talented as his previous classes were, that is it. He was an amazing recruiter the first 8 or 9 years. And he's a great offensive mind. his big thing will be Thompson as DC, I hope that guy falls flat on his face myself. I was surprised Spurrier went with a retread instead of bringing in an up and comer like he did when he went out and got Stoops, lord knows they could afford one with all the money they are saving on Visor boys contract and not having to pay an OC.
Not in Florida + Not getting a team with the talent he had at first with UF + an average at best recruiting class + a bunch of thugs = an average SEC year
lol of course he wont have the same success at SC. who the hell truly thinks that? I think he's biding his time for the Augusta course while winning a decent bowl game here and there then riding off into the sunset. nothing more but maybe bringing a little undue prestige to the Cocks for a bit. woulda been interesting to see him here though, dontcha think?
You underestimate how smart both of these guys were/are. They both have admitted over and over again why they went to their respective schools and how both of them could not understand why neither LSU nor UF were very successful over the course of many seasons, why other coaches kept falling down. Saban knows he will be in for a tough battle in the NFL and Spurrier knows he will have an uphill fight at USC, these guys are afraid of challenges though, so they took the jobs. One other thing, as for fundraising and facilites don't worry about USC, they will throw a ton of money at their school, as much as other school's boosters will, USC has a very long history of having great boosters.
Spurrier doesn't have to make South Carolina as good as UF in the 90's, he justneeds to win a couple bowl games, contend in the east, maybe win it once or twice and he'll be considered a God in South Carolina
Spurrier will do better at USC than Meyer will do at Florida. The East is going to be known as the tie-breaker division. I think that Fulmer will become Spurriers first victim. It is really too bad for South Carolina that Spurrier did not arrive a year earlier while they still had a good defense.
The man is a monster. It's amazing how quick we all are to claim the SEC as the greatest and toughest conference in football, but some of us hesitate to give credit to a man who OWNED it for more than a decade... 122-27 Record at UF 2 NCG Appearances (1995, 1996) 1996 National Champions 122 Wins from 1990-2001 is ranked as the best for a coach in his first 12 years in major college history The only coach in SEC history, and one of only 2 coaches in major college history, to lead a team to ten or more wins for 6 straight seasons The only coach in SEC history, and one of only 3 coaches in major college history, to lead a school to 12 consecutive seasons of 9 wins or more Achieved 100 victories at UF in a faster time period (10th season, 8th game) than any major college coach at a school in the 20th Century 1 of only 5 major college coaches in history, and only the second in the SEC, to lead a school to 100 wins in a decade 1 of only 3 coaches in major college history, and the only one in SEC history, to lead a school to an appearance in the weekly polls for a period of 200 consecutive weeks 1 of only 5 coaches in major college history to have his team ranked in the Top 15 in the final polls in each of 12 consecutive seasons Under SOS, UF finished in the Top 10 nine times and in the Top 5 six times He and Bear Bryant are the only coaches in SEC history to win as many as 4 consecutive league championships His 87-14 SEC record ranks as the best winning percentage in conference history (.861) and his 73 SEC wins in the 1990's represents the most SEC wins in a decade in conference history The only SEC coach in history to win 8 conference games in a season for 4 consecutive years The only coach in SEC history to lead a team to 9 straight January bowl appearances His 6 outright SEC titles (91, 93, 94, 95, 96, 2000) ranked 2nd in SEC history behind only Bear Bryant's 11 UF appeared in the weekly polls 202 of 203 possible weeks, including each of his last 202 consecutive weeks VS LSU (11-1) - Won 34-8, Won 16-0, Won 28-21, Won 58-3, Won 42-18, Won 28-10, Won 56-13, Lost 28-21, Won 22-10, Won 31-10, Won 41-9, Won 44-15 VS UGA (11-1) VS UT (9-5) UF was ranked #1 in the polls 29 times, appeared in the Top 5 for 117 weeks, and were in the Top 10 for 179 weeks 7 SEC Championship Game appearances UF offense became the pnly unit in modern college history to score at least 500 points for 4 straight years Prior to his arrival, UF had never won more than 9 games in a season 1966 Heisman Trophy Winner He won his 100th game at UF in just his 120th overall game (100-19-1 record) which ranks among the 6 fewest games yo reach that level in major college history His 142 wins in 15 years (UF and Duke) ranks among the 3 highest victory totals in history for a coach at the helm in his first 15 years Selected as a finalist for the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year award 4 times Named his conference's Coach of the Year 7 times (2 at Duke, 5 at UF) In 15 years as a head coach (3 at Duke, 12 at UF), his teams have led the conference is passing offense 10 times and total offense 9 times Coached 21 First Team All-Americans, 81 total All-Americans, 7 Academic All-Americans, 169 SEC Academic Honor Roll Players
