Indeed. Other than quarterback and offensive line, LSU is looking exactly like a top SEC team. And the problems there are not physical, but mental. QB and OL are the two positions that require the most intellect to play. Blocking assignments and angles must be judged instantly and judged the same way by everyone all while in the face of constantly shifting defenses that are trying to disguise their coverage's and blitzes. QB's have to assess instantly who the unblocked defender is and who the uncovered receiver is. These players have to be sharp as well as big, strong, speedy, and agile. Fortunately "game smarts" is something that can be improved with coaching and experience. If we had no talent there we would be screwed, but we have a fixable problem. Unfortunately it is often not a quick fix.
I think this hits the nail on the head. I'm hoping that with one loss behind us, Miles and company will unclench just a bit and let our guys play ball. They are doing this defensively, but the offense looks like it's being micromanaged.
You know, that's what i thought at first, but how is it possible that a team is being conservative, going 5 wide, empty backfield as many times as they did against UF. Doesn't it seem that they would be running the ball more?
Perhaps because Florida had the #1 defense in the country. They can burn you badly if they jump on a blown play.
I think that has pissed me off the most. That and seeing Black get beaten by anyone, much less inferior players.
yeah but Red, the run was working against UF. Charles Scott was getting about 4 yards a carry, and Holliday got about 6.5 yards per carry. If you watched Tennessee, they had success running the ball, and against Arkansas yesterday albeit Brandon Spikes was on the sideline, but Arkansas was running the ball extremely well without their best running back. Dennis Johnson made the UF defenders look like little bitches at times. I don't for the life of me understand why we went empty backfield 5 wide at all in that game. Our gameplan should have been to establish the run, and chip away at them, and chip away, and chip away, and have those safeties creep up, and then hit em with play action. There was no reason at all for us to be in an empty backfield set with 5 wide.
Guilbeau's article quotes Miles as saying: "I think there's some things that we can do better in communication," Miles said. "Maybe we need to go to the line of scrimmage with the right play. Then all (Jefferson) has to do is execute it." We'll find out Saturday if the meerkat offense is gone. :geaux:
Hey, we agree on something! You right though, you have to let it go sometimes and let the kids play. Also if you arent confident in your players it shows and it will manifest in their play.
And we have a winner. Just look at how they baby Jefferson especially after he throws a pick. We need to let loose on the playbook and let Jefferson do his thing. He has a great arm but we sure can't tell from the conservative play calling. Talented receivers on this team. Makes no sense we cannot be successful in the passing game. It's a matter of the pass setting up the run. Stop trying to do it the conventional way. It's just not working. You don't have the horses. Biggest loss on this team is Quinn Johnson. I didn't even realize it until this season what a great fullback can do for your team. And lastly, use ALL your weapons you have. Don't have Shepard and Randle pulling splinters out their ass after every game. I know they are merely freshmen, but they are human too.
