Both drivers licenses and Social Security cards are regularly counterfeited to get jobs and benefits for illegals. Also people have learned to guard their SSN for fear of identity theft. The Social Security card has ZERO security features and the drivers licenses have minimal security. These cards were never intended to be identification cards, but have been used as such in the absence of a proper secure ID. Both are easily faked and difficult to check, especially in another state. You can buy them online.

The difference with a smart ID card with a computer chip is that it can securely encoded with much more data which can be compared with the valid data online, Then it becomes impossible to fake the ID because they cannot fake the master online security database.

All an employer (or law enforcement officals) would have to do is have a small card reader and thumbprint scanner device to plug into their computer. Then the Internet records are called up to verify identity and foreign national status, if any. Quick, easy, and secure.

An employer must have a way to verify status if we are to hold him accountable for hiring illegals. The NID itself would preclude illegals from working, getting benefits, and evading taxes. So they would quit coming except through legal channels so we can weed out the criminals, the diseased, and the enemy.

An NID doesn't have to be a burden to citizens or a bloated bureacracy and it can be made counterfeit-proof. How does an authoritative ID hurt a citizen? It simply identifies him conclusively and legally, allowing fast-tracking in airports and borders and allowing those without verifiable ID to be scutinized more carefully by agents and guards. This is a great benefit to a legal citizen without a criminal record. He gets credit for being an identifiable US citizen and all the perks that come with it.

It is different from a Passport in that it would be mandatory, not optional, and would have no ID status outside the US. It would not be a document needed for foreign travel and a record of visas, but simply a verifiable and secure Identification. It would be better than a passport for ID.

Legal residents would have a "Green Card" version, vistors on Visas would have a version, and legal guest workers would have one. It would be exceedingly difficult for illegal aliens, spys, sabotuers, terrorists, and their kind to obtain one, which would make life in America difficult and would make them more obvious to the authorities.
