Clinton forced Bin Ladin to go underground because he got missiles tossed at him whenever he raised his head. before that, he operated openly and was able to travel and to access and spend his fortune. Not so afterwards. And did you forget that the Millenium Bombings, an 9/11-scale planned Al Qaida terror act, was not only disrupted but successfully foiled on Clinton's watch and the perpetrators jailed. I forgot to put that one on my list, thanks for the reminder. Five convicted and imprisoned by the US and seven condemned to execution in Jordan.

You're ducking the issues I've made about Bush's failures to eliminate Al Qaida since Afghanistan in 2003. This is what you said Clinton should have done. Al Qaida is bigger than ever on Bush's watch and merrily killing US troops in Iraq, when US troops should be merrily killing Al Qaida in Pakistan.

Congress downsized the post-Cold War military. A democratic congress from 1991-1993, a republican congress from 1994-2007.

 

It's a group of international criminals trying to embarass America. No nation has declared war upon us. One nation let itself be used as a base against us and we took Afghanistan down. As bad as 9/11 shocked and angered us, it didn't come close to endangering America, much less destroying it. They couldn't possibly destroy the US, that is simply terrorist rhetoric intended to terrorize us. Don't buy into their propaganda.

"The War on Terror" is also rhetorical and intended to convey the seriousness of the fight. But this is not a conventional war, as you must have noticed. The islamist criminals also use rhetoric and declare "Jihad" against the US. But what it really amounts to are crimes against civilians. Terrorism is a crime, it isn't a war.

We defeat terrorism by capturing or killing the terrorist criminal themselves. There is no nation to war against and hold accountable except Pakistan, where bin Ladin hides and who will not give him up or let us go get him. We may have to go to war with Pakistan someday, but meanwhile there are international terrorist criminals that need to be killed or caught.

Geez you should really study the issues before you make snap judgements. The camps were occupied, not only but Al Qaida, but by Bin Ladin himself just hours before the strike. At the last possible minute, the US informed our "ally" Pakistan that there would shortly be cruise missiles overflying their terrritory on the way to Afghan targets. This was necessary to maintain diplomatic relations, keep Pakistan from assuming that it was being attacked, and to keep them from trying to shoot down the missiles. Someone high in the Pakistan government informed the Taliban, who warned bin Ladin and enabled his escape just before the attack.
