Here's the deal guys. The state of West Virginia has always had an underdog mentality, always feels like it never gets enough respect (whether it's warranted or not). That naturally carries over to the football team, because West Virginia IS WVU Football. Being in the Big East and always battling it out with the ACC for not being the worst BCS conference and never getting enough national respect in the media, and you guys play in the SEC, the undisputed best conference in the country. So whenever we get a chance to play a national power like LSU, the underdog mentality always kicks in and we feel like we have to do/say anything to prove that we belong, in addition to backing it up on the field. I certainly respect the hell out of you guys, you're definitely one of the most knowledgeable fanbases out there and you have an amazing program. Now whether or not the other WVU posters on here do, well that's up to them. I just wanted to let you guys know that not all of us are crazy Good luck to you guys Saturday, I've been waiting for this game for a loooooong time.
Great post. What is funny is that Louisiana also has an underdog mentality historically. Our populace has long been ridiculed with equally unflattering stereotypes as the good people of West Virginia have long been ridiculed. Anything that gets flushed down a toilet between the Smokies and the Rockies goes into our drinking water. Assets are always things that are extracted from our land and people instead of being invested into our land and people. The biggest differences between our people stem from colonization trends in that we have that whole French and Spanish inertia going on whereas you guys were populated by lineages more characteristic of England. I respect the hell out of the West Virginia program. Not all of us have a mindset of "if you ain't SEC, you ain't didley-poo". Having said that, as a football program we often feel kind of penalized by being in the SEC as we see teams like Boise State and others play one quality opponent in a given year, go undefeated, and have a legitimate chance to wind up with a Championship. Our fate is that we play a pretty grueling schedule every year and it is damn near impossible to have less than 2 losses per season. Any shot at a championship in any given season means we have to beat at least Auburn, Alabama, and Florida and win the SEC Championship game in the same season. In addition, we also typically play most or all of the following in that same year: Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Georgia. Think about that for a moment. Teams like Notre Dame can schedule Army, Tulsa, Perdue, Idaho, Minnesota, and whoever else. They almost never play 4 games in a season against opponents ranked in the top 25 much less the top ten. Being in the SEC is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, by the time the season is over we are battle hardened by the annual SEC schedule in which we all eat each other's young. But, if we have 2 or more losses we're done in terms of being able to win a BCS trophy and all we can hope for is a quality bowl game with a quality opponent. I was pumped when WVU was added to the schedule. I hate seeing teams like Troy or Middle Tennessee State on our schedule. I really look forward to this game, but please don't be offended by the fact that our path to any BCS title hopes in reality go through Alabama, Florida, and other SEC matchups and not necessarily the Mountaineers.
The inferior team lost to Auburn...if you turn it over 4 times and lose you are the inferior team. If you turn the ball over 4 times against LSU are the Tigers better or did WV blow it? Don't make excuses and blame one player for your loss...win as a team and lose as a team and give a little credit to Auburn....they beat you.
Wait a minute.............someone told me nothing gets them to the only keyboard in the state faster..... which is it???
I believe that JJ with marshal many drives down the field for scores. Les will marshal the team and rally them to vicotry. May even have to declare martial law. Why we may even have to call in the federal marshals!!!! In fact just the other day I heard Marshall Faulk comment on how the Tigers were due for a big game under the lights in Death Valley. He even used the analogy of how General Douglas MacArthur was the Field Marshal of the U S Troops in the Philippines in WWII and how LSU, just like him, would return to Tiger Stadium for another victory on Saturday. Rumor has it that the team will earn a trip to the Marshall Islands after Saturday night's win. What the heck, I may even marshal myself a few beers after we win.
