Serious question, who ultimately runs this offense: Miles or Crowton?

According to Miles, Crowton calls the plays.

Crowton does call the plays just not the 4th quarter of the Vandy game.:yelwink2: Crowton was in the conversation but Miles took over the lead and made the final call.

Miles lies...or maybe he just forgets what he says.

Brings up a good point if the card meant that Miles took over in the game.

Maybe after it was apparent to Miles that JJ was stinking it up, miles took over and said, "Run it down their throat!" In which case proved to be a right thing in the 4th..

First of all, I agree this is a great thread - better than the other Crowton v. Miles threads, b/c it is really trying to honestly get at the heart of the problem, although none of us will likely ever know for sure.

I think the offense is primarily Crowton's. The only consistency year in and year out thusfar in Crowton's tenure is the lack of offensive identity, the look of confusion and ineffiency, and the lack of getting the ball consistently to playmakers. If you are looking at the play sets themselves, agree with Nootch's analysis. Istsl and Tirk make compelling arguments, but in the end, I still think we are primarily dealing with a non-genius CGC offense. People talk about this year looking different/worse, but I really don't think so. The last three years have looked exactly like this. Remember MSU last year, among others, Troy the year before, etc. Pathetic offense (and defense prior to Chavis). This year, they are actually looking less problematic getting the plays in, so that is an improvement.

Regarding Va Tech, OSU, and Ga Tech games, they were similar in that we scored points early in the game off of turnovers/mistakes, had good to great special teams play, and the defenses played lights out. The offenses were able to then make some progress once we were dominating on the scoreboard, but the offenses were not responsible for those big wins. The UNC game had the makings of that, but we went into a shell in the second half and had a TD called back b/c of penalty and allowed them to get back in it.

To me, not a lot has changed on offense, and it has CGCs fingerprints from prior stops, and his LSU tenure - a confused, inefficient (non-smooth) offense with no defined identity.

A knock on CLM is that he takes too long to make changes. Had we not stuck with the two headed monster co-DC, we may have done better sooner and had a better system in place sooner leading to more success last year. Talent has been wasted big time under CLM. The longer he sticks with CGC, the longer we waste the talent there.

Having said all of that, I still feel we will win 10+ games with the formula of strong defense and special teams, and average at best offense. B/c of that success, as Red eludes to, nothing will change coaching-wise or philosophy-wise on offense, for better or for worse, and we will continue to all be frustrated with what we see on the field and will continue to waste talent. Hope I am wrong about that.

Something that noone is talking about, but should probably be pointed out is, as we all have seen in game 1 JJ pretty much looked like last season and in game 2 JJ pretty much went backwards, that just what is Gonzales doing with this passing game coordinator position. JJ hasn't shown signs of improvement and our receivers are dropping more passes than have in the past. Many made the assumption that his position would be, sorta co coordinator and QB coach as well, why isn't there improvement, and has anyone noticed if he has a play card in his hands?I haven't, but I also haven't been looking.

i think its obvious crowton has an outline of les' philosophy to follow.

clearly les decided to call plays directly durng the 4th qtr saturday.

he shut the mf down which was really the smart thing to do. crowton would go 5 wide throwing screens even if up 30 late. les no can do. no way we are losing that game unless you give jj the opportunity and as bad as he was playing it was coming.

we lucked out on the first play from scrimmage. that was close to being first and goal vandi. what a beautiful call that was too.

So i guess another question is, does he have a chart in hand for the Mississippi State game? I mean think about it. From quarter 3 in the UNC game to quarter 2 in the Vandy game, LSU doesn't score. If not for Shepard and his wheels and a Jasper field goal, LSU would have gone 5 straight quarters without a touchdown.

playcalling had little to do with vandi late. they were getting mauled up front from wearing down it seemed. they had mailed it in for the most part. and who can blame them.

playcalling isnt the issue until we get the qb's head straightened out.

lets pinpoint what jj does well....

    pass? no
run? not really, b/c he has no running instincts.

he has no feel for the game is his biggest problem. whether thats the coach or just an inept qb remains to be seen. it looks like its the latter.

so anytime we have more than a 3 pt lead I think we'll be sitting on the ball at any pt in the 4th qtr.

les is going to play it safe which is hard to argue given you have no faith in anything the qb does. not even a simple option.

    its brutal.

112 offensive ranking was in large part due to jj last even though the o-line was terrible. pass blocking wasnt bad yet he took more sacks than anyone else in the sec.

his decision making isnt any faster or any better.

we are stuck due to no one better to replace him. j-lee may be out to sea if last year was any indication.

may as well stick shepard back there half the game til he proves hes incapable. we have little to lose offensively at this point.
