I'm not sure I agree. Spurrier beat Tenn & Florida which is big for SC, but Tenn has fallen on pretty hard times of late, I think Holtz would have beaten them also. Which leaves Florida as their BIG win. Because of the side stories with spurrier and the gators, it becomes a rivalry by default. Anything can happen in a rivalry.

Well, IMHO, it's a little early to make that claim since USC will be bowling this year.

Holtz left the cupboard completely barren. The job Spurrier did in managing through depth and injury problems, offseason problems that resulted in the suspension of 7 different players from the team, an arguably tougher schedule than Holtz faced last season, coupled with a complete turnover in staff ..... and still he engineered major upsets over USC's two biggest recruiting rivals...... it's Spurrier.

Contrast that with LSU, where the cupboard was overflowing with talent and the coaching stability was very manageable. LSU had 2 of it's 3 biggest games at home and has looked undisciplined and inconsistent for most of the season. Granted , hurricane Katrina had much to do with the situation Miles walked into, but the COY award has rarely been subject to sympathy voting (see Mike Price).

Miles should've gone undefeated this season, and LSU's loss to UT was purely a coaching meltdown. You don't overcome that stygma and win the COY award. Sorry, but IMO, Miles has not yet shown the promise that I believe he will eventually bring to LSU.

Can somebody please tell me when was the last time a first year head coach goes 12-1, I hope. I dont care that he inherited " A full cupboard". He also inherited Rita and Katrina, a coaching staff change and huge expectations. That in itself should get him coach of the year.:geauxtige

Coker went unbeaten his first year ('01) and won a Nat. Title. His cupboard was rather full also.

Coker walked into more developed talent than Miles did, but probably pretty equal potential.

Ahh, come on. The cock man is a pretty good coach. My point was that it wasn't a fluke that they did well his first year. Just like it is not a fluke that Coach Miles is doing well.
