You're arguing what he may have meant. I'm listening to what he said. It was quite clear to me that after he said it he tried to back pedal out of it. It wasn't one comment but a string of comments. I'm amazed at his supporters who try to explain that one. He thinks that starting a business is done by greedy people and takes assets out of the economy.
I understand how LIBOR works but I don't understand this: how a bank can self report the interest rate they would expect to pay and that somehow sets an international baseline rate for everything. Something like 800 trillion in securities and loans are tie to LIBOR, which was a completely made up number by English banks who colluded to report low borrowing rates to cover up their weaknesses. When this comes to affect everything from mutual funds, currency, mortgage rates and more....it is monsterous and amazing. I take the side of individual responsibility and freedom but this proves once again that humans need regulation. We can't handle our greed. It is our greed that need to be checked. give a man a gun and he can rob a bank. give a man a bank and he can rob the world.
We can argue about what he said and what each of us heard all day and not resolve anything; but I think you have to agree that overall he has a negative view of business. By that I mean he believes his (governments) job is to control business. Not to nourish and not promote - unless its on the approved list. I think he also believes making profits mean you screwed somebody - especially if your in certain businesses.
There are parrots on both sides of these liberal vs conservative issues. The only thing that both sides agree on is that there is a parrot in the discussion.
He clearly thinks not one man can build his dream on his own. Even with paying taxes that goes to roads etc. That man NEEDS help.......
I wasn't offended. Obama was talking about infrastructure that supports businesses, it is clear to anyone that reads the entire comment. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
There are tons of businesses that do not need roads or bridges. What he said was dishonest and out of touch.
