It actually comes from the word: Connaître which means "To know". There are two verbs in french used:

Savoir means to know
-a fact
-by heart
-how to do something

Connaître means
-to know (someone)
-to be familiar with (someone or something)

When you use it, you can see where it may be misunderstood:

Je connais bien ton père. I know your father well.
Il sait le poème (par coeur). He knows the poem (by heart).
Nous savons nager. We know how to swim.
Je connais son poème. I am familiar with his poem.
Nous connaissons Paris. We know/are familiar with Paris.

Let me add: Misunderstood by Non-French speaking people cause, in fact, the "Cajun" French is more grammatically correct. I learned that when I taught French but can't remember specific examples as that was 16 years ago.

Directly translated this means that Saban is the CoonAss Savior sent to T-town to save all the Cajuns. I also see something regarding a "Cajun" French invastion sometime in the near future to a Bryant Denny Stadium!

here's the latest news:

Alabama coach Nick Saban released a statement Wednesday concerning the content of a discussion which has been made public.

The tape of the conversation included the telling of a story to Saban by one of his Louisiana friends, whom he referred to as a member of the LSU Board of Trustees.

The friend who relayed the story to Saban was LSU Board of Supervisors member Charlie Weems of Alexandria.

When contacted by telephone Wednesday night, Weems talked about the entire episode concerning Saban.

"This started a week or two before the Sugar Bowl game," Weems said. "I was talking to Nick, his wife (Terry) and his agent (Jimmy Sexton). I was trying to do anything to stop (Saban) from taking the job at Alabama.

It was then announced on the morning of the Sugar Bowl that Saban had decided to take the position at Alabama.

"I was in New Orleans when word came out that Nick had taken the job," Weems said. "I was on Canal Street. I was wearing a LSU hat. An old guy asked 'did you see that S.O.B. took the job at Alabama. I feel like somebody's been sleeping with my wife.'"

Weems called Saban that afternoon after he accepted the Alabama job.

"I called (Saban) to say to him how disappointed I was that he took the job," Weems said. "Nick was very apologetic. He said that he wished he could be back at LSU.

"He asked me how the people in Louisiana are going to react to him taking the job. I told him that the people in Louisiana are going to feel betrayed. Then I told him the story I just told you. That's all there was to it."

Having listened to the tape of Saban's remarks, Weems defended the former LSU coach.

"In listening to the tape, I don't think Nick was trying to belittle our people," Weems said. "I don't think Nick feels that way. He had the story pretty close. I don't know if that guy was a New Orleans guy or a Cajun guy. I didn't say the f-word.

"Nick was just trying to relay the story to show how the people at LSU feel betrayed. Nick went from being a folk hero to being public enemy No. 1. I understand why Nick did what he did. It's not going to make it go down any easier for those who love LSU."

I'm 1/2 cajun myself. My mother grew up in the backwoods part of the Oberlin area called Soileau (swallow, I know you know how to say it). Spent much of my childhood of the farm and bayous. I actually consider that area as a second home. Going to that area this coming summer for vacation, the Cashatta casino. To get to the point, Coonass is as much of the language as hillbilly, redneck, yankee, etc. My family calls each other Coonasses, not that big of a deal.

By the way, somebody send some smoked sausage, boudin, and cracklin. I'm running short. Hope it holds until July.

I used to have a camp on Bayou Nezpique and went to that church in Soileau. Knew one of the sons whose family has the big set of rice dryers at that "T" to the West of the church. (Forgot his name but we met at McNeese) Have some cousins from Oberlin too- Fuseliers.

The 1st time I ever heard of the term coonass, it was on a bumper sticker of a car on base in Virginia, in about 1980. "Registered Coonass" I had no idea what it meant and, being from Alabama, I could see the obvious imflammatory possibiliites of it. So I asked the dude. He said he was a proud coonass from the state of Louisiana and explained what it meant. Since then, I've figured it to be a complimentary term for the most part.

I reckon the press is tired of waiting for NSD and the Super Bowl so they need something to stir the stink. It's the leading story on the radio news here EVERY hour. You'd think they'd find a murder or something to harp on. Their news reports have gotten as boring as their playlists.

1. It wasn't that big of a deal, we've all told coonass jokes down here. But we smile when we tell them.

2. I've always been quick to apologize if any coonassically sensitive gentleman gets offended by it.

3. Nick was foolish not to simply apologize and end it right there. Now it will drag on and the media will add it to his rep when they talk about him. He sure didn't need this on top of the "liar" business. Better to be a coonass than a dumbass.

Angelle and Bordelon, I apologize for saying coonass four times in one post.

We take pride in the fact we call ourselves COONASSES but he is the last person alive that should be using any Louisiana "terms of endearment" right now. He just sucks. Saban tries to back out of everything he says now.

Sounds like something they would say. Can't say i'm saddened by the negative pub for Bama, but to fire him is a stretch.
