It actually comes from the word: Connaître which means "To know". There are two verbs in french used:

    Savoir means to know
    -a fact
    -by heart
    -how to do something

    Connaître means
    -to know (someone)
-to be familiar with (someone or something)

When you use it, you can see where it may be misunderstood:

Je connais bien ton père. I know your father well.
Il sait le poème (par coeur). He knows the poem (by heart).
Nous savons nager. We know how to swim.
Je connais son poème. I am familiar with his poem.
Nous connaissons Paris. We know/are familiar with Paris.

Let me add: Misunderstood by Non-French speaking people cause, in fact, the "Cajun" French is more grammatically correct. I learned that when I taught French but can't remember specific examples as that was 16 years ago.

I am totally offended by the use of the word coonass to describe the people of louisiana:) FWIW the term coonass was coined early in the oil boom by Texans who worked with cajun's. They would say "your as dumb as a coons ass". Being the optimists that we cajuns are we turned that saying into a positive adjective to describe the funloving people of my culture (I can only speak for the South Lafourche area). By the way I am a registered coon ass and proud of it! To bad I now have to live in Helena AL

I read Saban's little explanation and I can't help but think how he sounded like Bill Clinton. So if someone tells you something that is an ethnic slur its okay to repeat it as long as it wasn't you who came up with it in the first place ? And if this wasn't "on the record", why then do we have a record of it ? If you are speaking to a group of journalists, you are on the record.

Whatever. I would just as soon focus on the great head coach that we have, the unbelievable team (better than Slinky's team) we are going to have next year and how we are going to kick @ss this coming season !

There is no true origin of the word. It is completely obscure.

satan tries to excuse himself by saying this was an anecdote and he used someone elses words. This does not absolve him. He obviously enjoyed the anecdote, or he'd have had no reason to share it with his new found Bama buddies. He was trying to impress them, with how quickly he'd forgotten any allegiance to or regard for the Louisiana people. To that end, he was willing to use us as the butt of a joke, and coonass wasn't the only expression, there were some blanked out words I took as the f bomb.

He's just crude, he has no regard for Louisiana people, and he does not want to tick off the high school coaches he used to be friends with, or potential recruits that are coonasses. So, now he tries to kiss back up so he can continue to recruit here. Believe me, that's what the press release is about, damage control. If he committed no dastardly deed, there would be no reason to release the statement he did. He screwed up, so now he's got to crawl some.

The low class mega egotistical jerk wad!!! This guy is lower than a whale turd!

No kid from Louisiana should go to a school where the head coach has insulted our ancestry!

Born, Raised and Registered Coonass and proud of it. So I don't find it offensive at all.

Warren Perrin, president of the Council for Development of
French in Louisiana, said the term is "highly offensive."

"I routinely state that the use of that term is highly
offensive to descendants of Acadians, who are commonly referred to
    as Cajuns," Perrin said.

What a load of crap I spent my entire life raised around the Pierre Part, Lafayette, South La. area and no one ever thought being called a coonass was offensive. In fact everyone was proud as hell so what does this yahoo know. Sounds like Warren and his crew think a little to highly of themselves.

It's hard to weigh in on this coonass statement. Being from North La, everywhere I go, when people find out I am from La, they call me a coonass. Well, I am not a coonass. More of a redneck. But it never offended me, it is just that people that are not for La. associate all of us as cajun or coonass. Kinda like we all think of people from California as hollywood types(of course that might be true). As far as Nick using the term in a joke, well he thought he was being clever. It probably would have blown over, except for the press statement, that he would never use such offensive terms. Bull chit. The boyz in the hood can call each other the Nword, and that is okay, but nobody else can. All of this PC chit is BS.
I call myself a redneck. But I am edumicated, know how to drink fine wine with certain people, and have a cold beer in a hole in the wall with others. I can provide my own food (grown or slaughtered), or go to Winn Dixie, and buy it. I can drive a tractor, operate a shovel, cook, clean house, chase women, and operate some of the most advanced computers in the world. But I am a redneck. Doesn't mean I am stupid. Coonass doesn't mean I am stupid. BUT, using any term, redneck included in a derogatory manor is just plain foolish.
Plus, when you are in a public position, nothing is ever off the record, especially when you are in a room with reporters.
I hope Bama and Slicky Nicky goes down in flames soon.
