Re: Saban meeting with Alabama today. WH will not negotiate his Dolphins contract

OK, thanks Saban for the crystal football.... I was cool with the move to the pros, that's the direction he seemed to want. But if he goes back to college and for Bama no less... I want to kick his punk ass up and down the field for his sntire tenure there and then schedule every other school he ever coaches at after Bama, I don't care if it's IIA! Screw him. I don't advocate dangerous or behavior unbecoming of LSU but it will be downright dangerous for those sorry ass gumps th next time they come to Baton Rouge.

    Here it is:

    1. I will go on record here, that Miles will own the series b/w Saban as long as the two are coaching at LSU and Bama respectively.

    2. Miles will do it with more class and not play the fans like an instrument every off season.

    3. Saban to Bama might end up being the greatest thing to happen to Miles. All the love for Saban that has been lurking in the shadows since Miles has been here will turn to venomous rage and backing for Miles every time we beat Bama.

    4. There will be multiple incidents when Bama comes to Death Valley every year.

    5. Saban will not have the same success at Bama as he had at LSU and become frustrated.

    6. Saban will wish he had never left for the pros and stayed in BR where he was God when all is said and done.

    7. Everyone, including LSU fans and the national media, will realize Saban is no Bill Walsh or Bill Belecheck (sp?) and is just a good coach that needs near perfect conditions surrounding him to reach the heights he reached in 2003.

There I said it. I hope this forum archives posts because I'll be digging this one up in 5 years time. Bama, welcome to a level of hatred that will make Auburn look tame. I will be wishing a new round of NCAA sanctions for you, maybe even the death penalty.

I'm amazed that folks are getting so worked up about Nick, especially the LSU fans since they know him better than most. CNS is good, and he's a master with adjusting his defense on the fly, but IMO he's not "all that and a bag of chips."

So Bama gets Saban ...... big deal. Overall, I think it's good for the conference. It cements the reputation of the SEC being a tough conference and in the conference's reputation as a pipeline to the NFL.

Nick still has the same pile of crap to deal with that Shula had to manage. Do you really think that acknowledged meddlers like Leroy Jordan and Ray Perkins are going to hand over the keys to the Bama program just because it's Nick Saban? LMAO

Don't get me wrong .... Nick will be an upgrade over Shula, but he's not so "great" that it justifies the way Bama treated one of their own, nor should Nick be "feared."
Hardly ....... Bama's days of "dominating" are over in today's age of parity. As long as there remains a level playing field, Bama will never again dominate to the level their fans desire.

As someone who follows in-state recruiting in the state of Alabama, Saban's impact will be marginal in-state. IMO, he'll have a significant advantage over Shula in recruting nationally, but the in-state recruiting rarely changes over time. Sure, it's cyclical, but it remains fairly equitable between AU and Bama regardless of the current level of success enjoyed by either coaching staff, and it has been that way since scholarship-limits were imposed.

Will beating Alabama become harder? In some ways, yes. But in other ways, the song remains the same, just a different verse.

    Saban to Bama.
    Miles to Michigan.
    Skip becomes a bottom feeder.
Maybe the Boise Coach would be interested in BR.

    If Saban goes to Bama:

    1. He effectively coincides that he can't coach at the pro level
    2. It solidifies the opinion that he is a money whore with no loyalty to anyone.
    3. Will have to go head to head with Tubby for the state of Alabama. Tubby was the only coach that could consistently beat Saban. Saban only beat Auburn twice in five years.
    4. He will have to deal with extremely over inflated expectations. For the money they are throwing at him he will be expected to go 10-2 next year.
    5. He will have to deal with Bama bosters that will not want to to give up control of the program.
    6. He will have to convince Bama fans that he is not the Bear and to forget him and move on. (BTW, that is the same thing Miles needs to do with LSU fans and Saban)
    7. Will be stuck in a 10 year deal and we all know how much Saban likes commitments. I cannot see that man staying anywhere for 10 years.

That seams like a pretty tough road ahead for Ol' Nicky if he does go to Bama. It doesn't realy matter to me either way. I will still root for Bama the same way I always have...pull for them if it helps LSU's cause, against if it doesn't. I see no reason to hold any loyalty to the man as he's shown none to anyone else. Coaching is just a job to him. He coached our team, we gave him his check, and he moved on. End of story.

Re: Saban meeting with Alabama today. WH will not negotiate his Dolphins contract

I'm not going to cry over spilled milk. I enjoyed the time Saban spent at LSU and will always remember what it felt like inside the Dome as the final seconds ticked down and we won the National Championship. Even with that win, I still never considered Saban as the savior or greatest coach of all time.

Saban helped upgrade our facilities and showed the nation what we already knew...that LSU could be an annual top-10 program by keeping in-state talent at home. At great as his contributions were, I still can't forget how we lost to Iowa in the Capital One Bowl (I was sitting on the dividing line between our fans and theirs...that sucked when they scored!), how we lost two games to Arkansas (including blowing our chance for the SEC West), and not being able to stop Florida from using the same play repeatedly when they beat us at home.

I think Saban is a great coach but he did lose 16 games in five years at LSU. Considering the competition that's a good record but hardly perfect and not worthy of elevating him to Hall of Fame candidacy.

His credibility wasn't questioned as much previously as it would be if he accepts the Alabama offer. Leaving Michigan State to coach LSU was an upgrade (sorry Spartan fans) and leaving LSU to coach in the NFL was also part of his progression. To leave the NFL after only two seasons can only be looked at in two ways...1) he failed miserably at Miami; or 2) he's only interested in money. (maybe both)

The Bama fans should be happy if he accepts the money. He's obviously an upgrade over Shula but they should also be cautious. If they think he's leaving Miami because Alabama is a "dream job", they're living in fantasyland. To believe he will remain there until retirement is also a dream. If he fails at Alabama, he will be gone. If he wins at Alabama, he will be gone. There are no other options.

Re: Saban meeting with Alabama today. WH will not negotiate his Dolphins contract

so your saying we were not able to get a coach?
A college can always get a coach, money talks. Dont fool yourself.
If Miles wasn't doing as good as he was, we'd prolly be tryin to out bid Bama.
It's all about the win column and the dollars the fans bring in. Know that.
And who says Miles is stable? He hasnt been here as long as Saban has, who's to say he won't take a bigger more lucrative job when the time comes?

You people kill me, laughing that is.

If Saban takes the job at Bama, it just tells me he is after $ not the Super bowl Ring.
He is well respected by me for what he did for LSu and still is, but if he takes the Bama job, I think it says something about his motives. I believed he truly wanted a shot at winning in the big league, now I have my doubts. BUT he hasnt taken the job yet. Wait and see.

I also thought Saban was smarter than that. Bama fans are still trying to dig up Bear, so no coach short of him will be bring back the charm. As alluded to by Caddy, parity in the league will prevent him from winning the NC every year, heck he'll be lucky to win the WESt every year. And that my friends is just not enough to satisfy Bama fans. For a year or so it might, but not in the long run. Of course maybe Nicky isn't worried about the "long run". I guess we'll find out.

Re: Saban to be offered 40-50 million contract...

I can't remember either, but it was 7 figures not 8 figures. You boys have raised the "huge" level.

That was in his original contract, but not in his final contract. They replaced it with the annuity. Both contracts had a handful of incentive bonuses if Saban won the Division, SEC or BCS titles and merit bonuses if his graduation rates were in the SEC top six and doubled if it was in the top two.

I don't know about Stoops, but I haven't heard of that clause in any other coaching contracts. LSU wanted Saban badly to get him to leave MSU and they came right out with their best offer including the incentive bonuses. Wow, remember when $1.3 milion was an outrageous salary for a head coach? Nick was tough negotating, though and insisted on a no-buyout contract. Fortunately former coach Skip Bertman also did not like no-buyout contracts, insisting that if a coach wanted out, LSU wanted him out, too. Quickly with no legal entanglements.

But the Nick experience taught him that even giving a coach everything he wanted in a contract wouldn't keep him from breaking it. So Les Miles is saddled with a $500,000 buyout ($1.5 million if he goes to Michigan).
