the talent for LSU that stayed in the state was a trend started by Dinardo, and improved upon by Saban. While he's talking about the LSU team is his players, is he mentioning that he won his first SEC title with Dinardo's players? Saban is a fantastic coach, but he was at a school with a lot of talented high school players with no competition (i.e. the only major football power in the state) not the case in Alabama, and none us know yet how this will turn out. He'll make them better, but I doubt he'll dominate like Bryant or Spurrier did.

I agree it's mostly recruiting but I think other factors come into play such as coaching, the team jelling, discipline, etc.

Seems I recall several HS coaches in Louisiana didn't want their players going to LSU to play for DiNardo. I know I read here that Saban had to repair some of those burnt bridges when he came to LSU.

That would have been Dunn the coach at Evangel. In Dinardo's final season, he was 2-8 and expecting to be fired, so he let recruiting slide as he tried to save his job. Evangel was a premier prep school with some top players and Dunn was offended that Dinardo wasn't kissing his ass like a lot of other coaches did. So he made a public comment that Dinardo wasn't recruiting seriously and he couldn't advise his players to go to LSU. Extremely bad PR for Evangel. Dunn was taking a shot at Dinardo, but he hit LSU instead. LSU supporters across the state came down hard on Dunn and Evangel and relations were strained. Evangel, a private school, lost out on some players because of it.

Nick had no dog in that fight and he came in and recruited Evangel like any other school. Evangel was grateful to jump back on the bandwagon. Dinardo was well liked at LSU and among HS coaches, he just let the wheels come off in 1999. Nick was quite well-respected by all concerned, including parents who liked his businesslike attitude, but he is not warm and fuzzy and was not particularly well-liked.

Like one Louisiana high school coach stated, "They'd have a tough time finding pallbearers for him" among high school coaches.

Re: Saban reportedly said (ph)"no way that the coaching staff at LSU can compare..."

Who is this Saban fella y'all keep talking about and why does he seem so popular here?

I was wondering what our bama friends (Terry & BayouTider) think of this latest salvo that saban is firing (if true) saying not only that all of LSU's players are his, but LSU's staff can't compare to the one at bama. I know all's fair when recruiting, but isn't this crossing the line?

There is no line that I know of other than the NCAA rulebook. You can be sure that Miles is not praising Nick either.

But negative recruiting is a double-edged sword. It often really turns off high school coaches and parents. Saban is a good recruiter and I imagine that he is careful about what he says. I know that Spurrier used negative recruiting tactics and it won him some players (usually out of New Orleans), but it cost him many others.

And the hits just keep on coming... Why would a kid sign with a guy like that, who dishonored himself at Miami. Do you think he would have longed to return to the college game if he was 13-3 and going to the playoffs? No. What an egomaniac!
