Is Myer really a better coach?? I'm really just asking b/c it seems to me Zook did just as well and he didn't have Teebow...and while I by no means am saying Fla. is bad (although their fans suck...they uprooted our 6 ft. LSU letters last night and kindly distributed them throughout our yard...I can not even type what I was screaming this morning across the street...not a pretty sight!:angryfire o: :cuss: ) I just wonder what Myer has done that is so much better than Miles?? Perhaps we'll have to wait until Jan. 7th or early Jan 8th to answer..
I was looking for somebody to write about when Saban got there Michigan State was coming off probation and a winless record. It took Saban 4 years but when he got his players recruited he went 9-2 with a Bobby Williams bowl win for 10-2. I think they beat all of their rivals that year too including Penn. State, Notre Dame and Michigan so.........
1998 defeated #1 ranked Ohio St. at Ohio St., also defeated top 20 ranked Notre Dame. 1999 defeated Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame & Penn. ST. this team also defeated Florida in the Citrus Bowl but was coached by Bobby Williams. His two losses were to Wisconsin (10-2 Big 10 Champs) and Purdue (7-5). As someone else stated earlier Saban took over Mich. St. after George Perles was fired for getting the Spartans on probation. NCAA investigation (costing MSU close to a million dollars) in 1994 uncovered infractions involving grade tampering by an assistant coach, MSU President M. Peter McPhereson ordered self-imposed sanctions on MSU including loss of scholarships and the forfeiture of all 1994 victories. In the end, the NCAA accepted the self imposed sanctions and added additional sanctions including additional loss of scholarships and increasing the probation from 2 to 4 years.
Very comparable to Miles' record at Okie State. It says a lot about a coach who can draw talent to and win at a second tier university overshadowed by another in-state school like Michigan and OU. It says a lot when those teams get to bowl games and pull off the occasional upset.
Well I guess that puts him on Houston Nutt's level after our game vs McFadden this year.:hihi: I think that this is a good thread because people will forever bring up Miles' record at OSU when attempting to bash him. And there's no doubt that these same people think the world of Saban.
Great: I have a damn Bama fan on here that's not going to let me slant my stats more in favor of Miles. Although I was talking about what Saban did during his first four years at MSU, I left out the big win he had in his fourth year against OSU. I meant to compare just the first three years between the two coaches, during which Saban only had one win against a Top 15 team. But now my original post is updated to show all his Top 15 wins over his 5 years there. Anyone can scroll up and read them. As for the other wins you listed: 1998 -- Yes that ND team was decent but not great. They started off the season at #22 and finished at #22. 1999 -- Ohio State went 6-6 that year, ND went 5-7 that year. Oregon did go 9-3, but the Pac 10 was weak that year. Oregon wasn't ranked in the Top 25 at any time during the regular season except for just one week at #25 (and then they lost). And Saban didn't just lose to Wisconsin and Purdue, he got absolutely destroyed by both of them (Purdue won 52-28, Wisconsin won 40-10). I mean the guy has recruited himself a team with enough talent to beat #3 Michigan, #13 Penn State, and #10 Florida, and then in two other games that same year his team gets beat down like a bunch of little girls. That's the main thing I didn't like about Saban. He was so hot and cold it was crazy. At LSU, he gave us all these great wins, but he gave us all these humiliating losses as well. That's one of the main reasons I could never fall in love with the guy.
You also failed to mention that Michigan State was on probation when he took the HC job. In addition Michigan State was no LSU. To be objective you should also mention how many of the great recruits that Dinardo signed never go to play a down because of accacemics and charactger issues. Maybe Louisiana boys always wanted to come to LSU, however, check the rosters of the National Champions, Miami, Florida State, and Tennessee, you will find several of their best players were kids that were from Louisiana. Several of them were from Baton Rouge. Saban did kick down the barrier around New Orleans. I'm glad he came to BR. There have been few LSU wins that I have enjoyed more than the two wins vs Tennessee. One was the SECC game. I live in Tennessee and suffered through loss after loss to the Vols during the Cholly Mac days. Saban was such a relief from almost twenty years of misery. We finally won an SEC Championship. Now we have three in this decade and the future looks bright.
It is also important to consider is that The Michigan State Spartans are on a whole different level than The Oklahoma State Cowboys. Look how tiny OSU is compared to MSU. Michigan and MSU are like Texas and Texas A&M. Oklahoma and OSU are like Texas and Texas Tech. Second, look at the tradition of their football programs. MSU has just as many national championships as LSU. SIZE OF SCHOOL OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY Endowment: $382 million Staff: 1,857 Students: 23,819 Football Stadium Capacity: 44,700 MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Endowment: $1.631 billion Faculty: 4,500 Students: 46,045 Football Stadium Capacity: 75,025 FOOTBALL TRADITION OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY All-Americans: 32 National Championships: zero Major Bowls: Cotton (1944), Sugar (1945), Cotton (2003) MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY All-Americans: 73 National Championships: 1952, 1965 Major Bowls: Orange (1938), Rose (1954), Rose (1956), Rose (1966), Rose (1988)
A&M beat Texas this year and Tech played a 59-43 game- weakens your comparison substantially, in reality- imo.
