Whew, you are way off on that answer. way off. A guy can play in the first 3 games at least and not burn a redshirt. Big Herm was awarded a medical redshirt last year when he was hurt in the Miss. St. game. If the redshirt rules were emforced to the letter of the rule you may be correct about the the regular redshirt. The medical redshirt has nothing to do with how many games a player appears in but more to do with it being the second season ending injury he received. Which makes Big Herm getting a redshirt for last season even more confusing but I believe the NCAA gave him one becuase of the limited amount of time he played in what could have been his reshirt freshman season. There are several exceptions to the redshirt rule and all redshirts have to be requested.

Definition of a Medical Hardship/Waiver from the NCAA: 20 percent translates to 3 games. Yes, there are probably exceptions to this, but this has been the general redshirt rules for quite some time.
