I like discussing it. That's what I'm doing. I'm bored too you know. Maybe we agree. My beef is with the people who want him off the team now. And this thread seems to be filled with people dancing around that opinion but not coming out and saying it. I wish they would just say it, and tell me that if they were the coach, and know only what they know right now, he would be gone.
Well. Then thanks for losing us the SEC Championship and ultimately the National Championship coach. But I give you props for at least taking a stance on your opinion.
At the time no one thought we had a shot after losing the Ark-ansas game. Miles would have been making the decision under those circumstances not with 20/20 hindsite. I also believe that your comment would have never come up if he had kicked RP off the team at the time. The prevailing opinnion even after the UT win was that we were hoping to make a BCS game.
One suspension was over a matter where he was not charged by the police. One was for missing classes. Perrilloux has received exactly one suspension for committing a crime and that was a non-violent, victimless crime. This isn't like the Tennessee player that has 5 alcohol-related suspensions. Nobody gets dismissed for missing practice.
We were already in the SECCG by Arkansas. So do you take the red shirt off of Lee? Or put the game on Welker and Hatch? Or further injure Flynn? Remember people already question your ability to win the big one, and you have one SECCG game loss under your belt already.
It's pointless to call out fans that want to move on. This is not a first incident, or a second. It has become habitual and there is no doubt it has become a distraction and disruption for the team. Take a hard look at that word - TEAM. No, this doesn't seem to be a hanging offense. Yes, the players support him. Yes, he has amazing potential. And yes, the fans are tired of seeing articles of RP getting suspended. It is borderline ridiculous. I want him to succeed. I want him to straighten out. I think we all want that for him, and all realize that we will never be fully privy to every detail that went into the decisions surrounding him or the team. I trust Miles to hold the team's integrity above the future of any one player. I am willing to let the situation play out because I trust Miles to do the right thing. Some people have surpassed their tolerance level for RP's shenanigans, but that does not make them fair weather fans. If you have or had teenagers, you can understand the frustration when they don't just grow up and stop making boneheaded mistakes. I think that is probably the underlying feeling for all of us. It's just time to grow up.
Parents/fans don't give up on them, but we are not in the position to put our foot up his butt either. RP has brought the feelings of the fan base upon himself, and they are validated. Whether I agree with them or not.
I don't think being a crime has anything to do with it. Players can be disciplined for any reason. I think we both know we can count on one hand (ok, maybe two) the number of college football players suspended as many times as RP. I assume Miles doesn't hand out suspensions like candy. He knows the scrutiny and negative publicity that comes along with suspending a star player, so he does it with great thought and for the right reasons ... or so I hope. You can break down the offenses individually and say they aren't a big deal. But most of us know that if we were suspended, minor or not, we'd get our act together and it would never get to three suspensions. Aside from the fact that it's the slow season, my point of this discussion is to show the RP as not matured much from his first suspension last summer. If multiple suspensions don't grab your attention, what will?
