Now that the reds are telling NATO "step aside" one must wonder if there could be a realignment of those pesky ICBM's? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315674/
Yeah, but now we have an agreement in place to put interceptor missiles in Poland! Wonder if the Russians will be willing to stand down until 2010?
Russia seems to be getting antsy. I don't like it. What are we going to do if they invade Poland? I imagine they can make life difficult for us, particularly with nuclear capabilities. Is Poland = Cuba in reverse?
Russia is politically naive. This whole Polish missile base is unneccessary and was an expensive and needless provocation of the Russians. It's a Bush administration plan that was unlikely to be implemented by the next president anyway. But now they have made a political mistake that may force the US into following through. Bottom line: Despite our denials, the missile defense base is aimed at Russia. Iran has no nukes or ICBMS and is no threat to us or Europe. Sure the ten interceptors will not stop Russia's thousands of missiles, but it would have stopped Russia making a limited strike against Europe and daring us to respond with a intercontinental exchange. We wouldn't have committed national suicide to defend Europe from a few Russain missiles. But we would have defended against it. If Russian invades Poland, it will be World War III. We are militarily committed to defend NATO members as if we ourselves were attacked.
I agree. The key point is that not only are we going to base the missiles in Poland, but we will also base troops there to garrison it. If the missile defense system was purely for defense against the Middle East, we wouldn't need more than a token security force in Poland to protect it. The Iron Curtain may be back, just shifted a little more eastward. The Germans are probably tired of us being there (except for the economic boost), but the Polish are like the Germans were 40-50 years ago; afraid of the bear next door and willing to let the US take care of it. Same goes for the other ex-Warsaw Pact countries. A return to the good old days of interlocking alliances. Looks like certain people in the government need to read (or re-read) The Guns of August.
Iraq was unnecessary and actually tangential/detrimental and war was never voted on by congress. Russia going off their meds is a different situation.
