Re: Russell named SEC Offensive Player of the Week Welp, I have officially heard it all now. Most fans will take a 'W' with atoned for mistakes versus him playing a perfect game and we lose all day long. You're entitled to your opinion, but why not save you and the others save the relentless criticism for when it's actually deserved? As long as we win, what difference does it make? And God forbid should we stumble again this year. I can just see all of the 'I told you so' threads now.
No one (at least me) is saying he played perfect ball. But what I am saying is that he showed great poise and leadership by overcoming his mistakes to win a road game against a top 10 conference rival. That is not a trivial accomplishment. I don't think MF does that if faced with a similiar situation.
I have grown bored of this subject and for all y'alls wasted typing and attempts none of you have changed my opinion of Russell. While he seems to show small steps in improving, a quote Great Qb would have done so after the Auburn game if not before that. His inablilty to react to coverage, his inability to effiecently check off when the blitz is shown, to determine when to thread the needle and when to air it up, and when to throw the ball away will win him the next 2 games with ease and have a nail bitter in a bowl game. Should he chose to come out early he will fade into bolivia, to quote Mike Tyson, or he will spend his NFL career as a journeyman backup. Should he stay then next year we will win the games we are suppose to win by huge numbers, and the games we are suppose to lose we more then likely will or at least have nail bitters. This all hinges on if he contiunes his slow growth rate as a player, I think a little extra time in the flim room or hitting books would help out tremendiously. And to all the little chicken **** people that enjoy giving red points out to people with different opinions then themselves, at least MAN UP and attach your name to it. Although given rep points for different opinions is the reason the rep system does not work.
Re: Russell named SEC Offensive Player of the Week It was a no-brainer. I knew he would get the award before the game was over. Congrats JR.
And stop worshiping the guys on the BENCH. I never said JR was perfect.....and unless you have reading comprehension problems, you would have understood that.
Bless you, my son. That post nearly brought a tear to my eye. So well said. These same people who are hailing him as some God would have been tearing his butthole apart had Doucet not saved his ass on that god-awful 4th down pass on the very last possession. He is decent. There's no doubt about that. He has progressed against terrible defenses. I will give you that (therefore, the better stats this season over last season). But when the pressure is on in the big games against good defenses, this dude is very nearly awful. Three SEC road games, and the results have not been good. At some point, you have to step up. He has one more shot at Arkansas. I hope he does it.
I don't think extra time in the film room will do any good. His football instincts are non-existent. That's the real problem. You can't teach that. And if after his 3rd season he has shown no improvement in that area do to an increased experience level, chances are he will never improve in this most critical area that a QB needs to be excel in.
More exaggeration, not backed up by the evidence. The guy is 21-4 as a starter! I'd say he has some football instincts. Get real. Today Russell was named a semifinalist for the the 2006 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- The Davey O'Brien Foundation today announced eighteen semifinalists for the 2006 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. The organization's original watch list, unveiled in August, included 34 players. The O'Brien Selection Committee, made up of a nationwide panel of sportswriters, commentators and former O'Brien Award winners, will vote later this month to narrow the field again. The three finalists will be announced November 21 by the National College Football Awards Association in a joint effort among college football award programs. The eighteen semifinalists, in alphabetical order, are: Erik Ainge, Tennessee, Jr., SEC John Beck, BYU, Sr., MWC John David Booty, USC, Jr., PAC-10 Colt Brennan, Hawai'i, Jr., WAC Brian Brohm, Louisville, Jr., Big East Chad Henne, Michigan, Jr., Big Ten Kevin Kolb, Houston, Sr., C-USA Chris Leak, Florida, Sr., SEC Nate Longshore, California, So., PAC-10 Colt McCoy, Texas, Fr., Big 12 Tyler Palko, Pittsburgh, Sr., Big East Brady Quinn, Notre Dame, Sr., Ind. Bobby Reid, Oklahoma State, So., Big 12 JaMarcus Russell, LSU, Jr., SEC Troy Smith, Ohio State, Sr., Big Ten John Stocco, Wisconsin, Sr., Big Ten Pat White, West Virginia, So., Big East Jared Zabransky, Boise State, Sr., WAC
Russell has 6 Touchdown passes over 25 yards. He has several very long completions that did not result in scores. Of course he throws more high completions passes. Thats just common sense. I can't find anything to back it up, but I'd bet the guy's downfield completion percentage is higher than average.
Colt McCoy the freshman quarterback at Texas has four straight games in which he threw a TD pass of fifty yards or greater.
