First, I know of no one who said that Rivers and Randle are not dependable backups. They are unproven which is not the same. No one expects guys who have been redshirted to have proven themselves as backups. I am saying that I have yet to hear glowing things about them and if I remember right, Rivers threw a pick 6 in the spring game or an INT run back a very long way if not a TD. {sigh, brought tears to my eyes, Jarrett Lee's spirit still alive in Tiger Stadium}. I agree with you about QB to some degree but I have no idea why you keep having this amnesia. Russell was a #1 overall draft pick and Flynn clearly is a quality QB as proven by what the Seahawks just paid to get him. Either you need a new calendar ("develp a QB since Miles got here" and your "8 years" comment in another post) and you need to review LSU QBs. BTW, as much as I did NOT care for Jefferson and Lee, I must point out that statistically they were in the upper half of the SEC in every statistical category...completion %, TDs to INT ratio, yards per attempt, etc). That does NOT make them great QBs but hardly puts them as horrible either. Your comment about Kragthorpe and Miles is just ridiculous so enough said on that. And once again, I will point that even Crowton attracted Zach Lee who I think would have been the best LSU in a generation and it was not Miles nor Crowton's fault that a 3rd round baseball player went 1st round and in his spot in the 1st round, he got 5 times the money he should have gotten because the Dodgers owner was trying to prove a point.
50% completion is not good for sure and neither is his INT to TD ratio. Having said that, I think most LSU fans would have taken his 120 yards passing against Alabama with far less talent to work with on offense compared to what LSU got in 2 attempts vs Alabama in 2011 season.
First, I doubt Liggins will ever take a snap at LSU. IF he ever gets to LSU, he will be on defense. In HS he played a lot of defense so no switching of position. Just like Beckwith is listed as QB/DL by the services, no one is saying the guy will be a QB. The other thing that happens all the time, particularly at QB and RB is that the guys down the depth chart transfer. So your list of 7 will be 6 because Liggins will never be a QB at LSU even if he gets here, Mettenberger will be in the pros next season if he has any kind of good season which knocks it down to 5. Then at least one of those guys, probably Randall, will either transfer or switch positions. Your 7 is really 4 by any measurement for the start of the 2013 season. That is about right IMO. And Bolden will be a SR in 2013 IF he comes to LSU because no way are they going to redshirt him. Once again, I much more concerned about LSU trying to corner the market on TEs which I consider a reasonably unimportant position compared to LSU having enough QBs which is a very important one...oh, and having a couple of quality QBs for a change.
People are writing Randle and Rivers off by saying we really need this guy. I think he's going to interfere with their development by taking practice reps and game time away from them. My Miles and Krags comment was supposed to be sarcastic...but it didn't come off that way....so you are right on the mark about it !!
Stop it! Why do you keep saying this? He hasn't even started a game for us and you keep advancing this theory. What evidence do you have that he is so good that he will head to the pros after ONE year of D1 experience?
What about Flynn? I don't think these transfers have any indication of rivers and randalls talent I just think it's smart to Have an experienced backup ready to go if mett goes down. Leave mop up to rivers and Randall so they get a little experience. They're young though. So they still have more developing left to do
Not a writeoff but facing reality. LSU has 0 backup right now that has taken a college game snap. If you want to be #1 in the nation, that seems like quite a hole to me. I do agree with the interference in taking practice snaps but I guess a decision needs to be made. Do you want to risk a horrible situation where Mettenberger is unable to play QB due to injury, etc and have 0 experience to plug in at QB or do you want to delay the development of 1 guy who probably won't play QB at LSU (I'm talking Randall) and another guy who is not ready for SEC play either (Rivers). I think LSU wants to win the NC THIS season so you try to build the best QB situation you can...admitting that Bolden is hardly an Andrew Luck in the making either.
Just read the comments by almost every LSU beat writer and even the LA sports columnists. I have not seen one single person who believes if Mettenberger has a very good season, he will return to LSU for his SR year. Not one. That is just the nature of college sports these days. And once again, guys want to leave early who have no business leaving early, aka Russell Shepard, aka a bunch of SEC players every year who don't even end up getting drafted. But I think Mettenberger really is going to have to have the expected year AND stay healthy and start every game pretty much. With his lack of college game experience, I think the pros will also be keeping an eye on his durability.
