Sadly, those words are going to be his legacy.

I saw this coming a mile away. Penn St. was his life. Once he was force out, which was the right thing to do given the circumstances, it basically killed him. I realize he had a deadly disease, but my mother had a very aggressive form of lung cancer and lived for over a year after she was diagnosed. JoePa was devastated about his fall from grace and basically did not have the will to fight. I acknowledge this is only speculation on my part, but it seems to make sense.

And what's the first thing you think of when that guy's name comes up?

Remember, in many cases, the cover-up in some ways is worse than the crime.

Because people IN POWER knew and didn't come forward, to do THE RIGHT THING.

Would Paterno have acted differently had those been his grandchildren?

And Paterno NOT been Sandusky's buddy?

RIP JoePa, and may all those molested get the help they need.

    J. Sandusky, hope ya rot in hell fella.

The man covered up the anal and oral rape of children to protect his beloved football program from being tarnished. How many children would have been saved from being raped had he not covered it up?

I don't think he was a malicious man but his selfish cover up destroyed the lives of untold children.

    Sorry if I'm not weeping.

Yeah ..your right ... Mccreary or what ever his name claims he told the police.

But .. it is irrelevant in my mind. I disagree with your position. I can unerstand JoPa's position ....
Joe Paterno speaks publicly on Sandusky scandal

""I didn't know exactly how to handle it and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was," Paterno told The Washington Post. "So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn't work out that way."

"And then I called my superiors and I said, 'Hey, we got a problem, I think. Would you guys look into it?' 'Cause I didn't know, you know," Paterno told The Washington Post. "We never had, until that point, 58 years I think, I never had to deal with something like that. And I didn't feel adequate."

"With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

All of this is consistent with how 90% of all human's would have handled it all. It's not that they didn't care, or wished to cover it up, it's just that the issue goes beyond their ability to absorb and process the situation, and as such, the best they can do is hand it up to higher authority, for whom they assume will have better knowledge of how to handle the situation.

I highlighed the "benefit of hindsight" .. because this is paramount in terms of the difference of what a person does, versus what a person wishes they had done. It is a difference in making on the spot decisions without the benefit of all the knowledge associated with an issue, vs the typical arm-chair QB-ing that we all do after the fact.

I, You, .. .JoPa himself, ..wished he had done more. But for all who would nail JoPa to the cross for the Sandusky Scandal, ... 90%+ of you would have handled it the exact same way as JoPa. Yeah yeah yeah .. you can puff up your chest, get all macho on us, and say you're superman .. say what "you would have done" in a situation that you are not in ... but it's all just a bunch of bloviating.

JoPa didn't rape any kids. According to JoPa ..Sandusky was not "his buddy" as many of you think. JoPa was not sure how to handle such an allegation and handed it up to higher authority. There were a plethora of people higher up than JoPa that were more informed on the issue than JoPa ... they are the one's who failed the kids. [and .. as I recall, a few of them are on trial] ... JoPa was not.

    RIP

I'm saddened by Coach Paterno's death. It's beyond sad what happened to those young boys, but the assertions that Paterno is just as guilty as Sandusky is truly unfair.

I agree with oceanlsufan. I believe that he did think he was doing what he needed to do, following a chain of command. The ball was certainly dropped along that chain. What would any of us have TRULY done after reporting to our superiors an allegation reported to us, which we did not witness?

There's a lot of blame to go around, but the blame game also gets out of control in our society. Joe Paterno has died, and I'm sure that this scandal and tragedy hastened his demise. But I still think he was a better man than was represented in the past two months.

I would not have waited till the weekend was over which JoePa said himself he did. I would have picked up the phone and called 911 or CPS.
