I was about to ask you that, because i think that is what is confusing you. Battery does not mean punching, all it is an "any unlawful touching." If i lay my hands on you without your consent, that's battery, i don't have to punch you. Heck, spitting on someone has been ruled as battery. Apparently, RJ did get physically involved in the tussel between his friend and the cop, but apparently what RJ did wasn't that bad because the cop didn't take him to jail and book him like he did his friend, he just gave RJ a ticket
That reminds me... I am very pro-law enforcement, and it pisses me off when i hear one of my friends say they hate cops That said, cops aren't always right. I've had several cool cops let me go when i should have been arrested, and I've had some cops arrest me when they shouldn't have (and i got the charges dropped) Two of the times they arrested me when they shouldn't have was just because i was a witness when they arrested my friend that i was with for something he did wrong. They do that because it makes their case better when they give me, as the only witness, a charge too. Not saying that was what happened with RJ, but it does happen
"That's when Jefferson and Joe Horace Sharp, 17, of St. Rose, allegedly attacked Collins, "striking him," according to a Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit." "The Sheriff's Office booked Jefferson with battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and interfering with a police officer, according to the summons." Just a few key words that caught my attention in the article.
I say cut him loose now. We don't need another sideshow this year. Enough is enough, toe the damn line or get the hell out.
that Times Picayune article you are quoting isn't saying he was taking to jail and booked, just giving a ticket. Just poor word choice on their part. As for the striking part, it doesn't say RJ struck him, it says: That's when Jefferson and Joe Horace Sharp, 17, of St. Rose, allegedly attacked Collins, "striking him," according to a Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit. It doesn't say who hit him between RJ and Horace. Sounds like the cop doesn't know which of the two hit him (and again, maybe the cop is wrong and neither of them hit him, just Sampson). It was at a parade, there should be tons of witnesses. If the cops don't produce any, that's going to look really fishy to a judge...
There was at least one article reporting multiple punchings. http://www.fox8live.com/story/21612...son-charged-with-resisting-arrest-by-violence I'm not sure what to make of that, though. Seems like if this was really in an official report everyone who wrote anything about the incident would have mentioned it.
That article doesn't quote the affidavit, just the author's interpretation of it. At least the TP article quoted two relevant words from the affidavit. Someone needs to look up the affidavit all the articles are relying on so we can read it for ourselves

Carencro police accepted LSU tailback Kevin Faulk's apology for getting into a fight with officers who tried to detain him. But the city wants more, nearly $15,000. Officer Andrew Hubbard needed $12,387.20 in medical treatment for foot and knee injuries sustained when he fell during the scuffle, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in state district court in Lafayette. The lawsuit also asks Faulk, the only defendant, to cover $2,592.96 in disability benefits paid to Hubbard. The officer missed several months of work but has recovered and is back on the force, Police Chief Jerry Arceneaux said Wednesday. The suit was filed by the city of Carencro and the Louisiana Municipal Risk Management Agency Workers' Compensation Fund, which was created by the Legislature to insure municipal workers. Carencro police detained Faulk on Feb. 19 at the R&R Lounge in Carencro, after he got into a fight over his girlfriend. Faulk was cited on two counts of simple battery on a police officer and one count each of failure to move on and resisting arrest. LSU coach Gerry DiNardo suspended Faulk from the team in February, but reinstated him after Faulk apologized to Arceneaux and the four officers involved. http://lubbockonline.com/news/112996/citysues.htm
