You're probably right about the two-year-old theory. My daughter didn't start noticing skin color until she was three. That year, she asked me why her teacher had brown skin. She also noticed that her doctor had brown skin. She didn't, however, find it to be negative, just different from her. Perhaps it helped that she absolutely adored both her teacher and her doctor. The next year, she adored Jamarcus Russell (Matt Flynn never quite captured her affection the way JR did.) She also noticed his brown skin, but said, "That's okay, though." So, she began to recognize racial differences, but at home, we downplay them quite a bit. Not to mention that my husband and I have friends across racial lines, including her "Uncle" D'Wayne, a former college basketball player, who is married to a white woman. Sloane has never even asked us anything about D'Wayne and Jen being an interracial couple. I probably would've found that to be really strange back in the 70's. I do think times are changing, but I also agree with CParso that it's probably skewed by my own experience. I'm pretty sure that not everyone, even in my age group, is all that racially tolerant.
I like this outlook and view of the world, its funny to see how children handle this. We do instill these ideas in the minds of our children, but your daughter I would say has a head start on a successfull life because of your teachings and her outlook of society being that young. Great Job! I have this same situation with my best friend who is white (Italian), I am going to his sons Christianin this weekend. His family accepts me to the fullest and I have heard his dad say some very racist things, but I love his dad and talk to him on a regular basis. I think we all have the fortitude to be tolerant, its really a personal decision.
Obama comes out pretty strong against Rev Wright. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Obama-Pastor.html?hp "I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday," Obama told reporters at a news conference." "The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago," Obama said of the man who married him." "I gave him the benefit of the doubt in my speech in Philadelphia explaining that he's done enormous good. ... But when he states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS. ... There are no excuses. They offended me. They rightly offend all Americans and they should be denounced." im a little surprised. thought he would just avoid the issue. i do notice, though, that (at least in this article) obama only mentions the HIV thing----that one was the most obvious, least defensible point.
He can't. Failure to drop Wright like a rock at the first was a political blunder that has hurt Obama. Now that Wright has come out of hibernation and is openly espousing the same anti-American and anti-white tripe, it has made the issue come back to the front and voters are questioning the kind of personal associations the are comfortable for a potential president to have. Wright is the gift that keeps on giving for Hillary. Now, Obama must defend his earlier support of Wright and be tainted by association with un-American and racist ideology. Or . . . he must finally drop Wright and be thought to be doing it only for political expediency. It's a lose-lose situation and Obama can neither avoid it or turn it to his advantage. He'll have to take the credibility hit right now and drop Wright quickly, try to move on, and hope for a Clinton blunder. Otherwise it will dog him for the duration of this contest.
youre definitely right about the lose-lose situation. i gave him credit for not throwing wright under the bus. now, he loses it with me for appeasing the masses. wonder if this is his decision alone or is his hand being forced by superdelegates?
This, more than most things, makes the difference. If we seek to have issue with every nuance or verbiage based on cultural dissimilarities rather than intent, folk will always be at war. "We share the same biology, regardless of ideology."
I have not read this whole thread and might should before posting this... But since I thought this when I saw it I figured I might throw it out there. Is there a possibility that the obama camp is getting out in front of this disaster before the general election. Meaning that wright publicly and intentionally made the same remarks as before to gave obama a second chance to slam him as he should have done the first time? Kind of a planned "do over". Maybe I am just cynical about politics. You can't tell me you listen to a person speak for 20 years, then one night when you hear him on TV, you immediately think his views are wrong. Again, sorry for coming to the discussion late, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the comments.
You can never be too cynical about politics, or politicians. Red, can Obama lose the nomination at this point. Most talking heads say that there is mathematically zero chance that Hillary can take the nomination at this point. The only way she could get the nomination is if some superdelegates switch their votes, and go against their constitutes. If this did happen, I could see there being a very severe back lash to the democratic party. That being said, if Obama has the nomination sewed up at this point, then Beaux's comment hold some water. Now would be a better time for Obama to deal with this, instead of in the general election. The only problem I have with this theory is the fact that Obama has done a very poor job dealing with Wright this time also.
I think he has handle it pretty well, now its a game for Wright, i think he is intentionally trying to hurt Obama. However, Obama is smart enough to know how to handle this situation. People are seeing Wright for who he is, intelligent, but a media whor e, attention grabber. At this point the only hope for the democrats is all of the new voters that have registered Democrat to participate in the process. The other ace in the whole is the economy for the Democrats, I think we win if we really push that issue onto republicans. McCain doesnt get the economy and healthcare and it showed in his speech yesterday. Tax credits for people who buy healthcare, what a load of shyt.
i did too. what do people expect? obama to act like bobby knight? i dont think its that as much as ego. i think he hates that everyone is saying all this crap about him. he wanted to show that he doesnt think he's wrong and doesnt regret what he said. its sad, but this proposal was funny. he's getting worse by the hour.
