That's the best explanation I have heard so far.

    Very well articulated.

You know, in the late 70's radio stations and papers were always reporting that Ara Parsigian had bought a house in Baton Rouge -- every time pressure on Charlie Mac mounted. Every time. There is somebody out there that will tell you anything.

Nick Saban still has plenty of work to do in BR

He needs to hoist another crystal ... over the mudhole-stomped bones of USC "HIGHSman" Leinart & the NC wannabee Boys of Troy ... lotsa work left to do in College.

Nah-uh. Many times, I've seen coaches do it. They don't, however, come out and say "I turned down their offer." They "withdraw their name from consideration." And, the public generally doesn't know if the coach was offered the gig, was expecting an offer iminently, or had been politely told that he would not be considered further. I disagree with you on this one, Licks.

I am now 75% convinced/concerned that Saban is going to take the Dolphins' job...

thats not necissarily true. there's a such thing as "withdrawing your name from consideration". it happens frequently. it usually pisses off potential employers more if you drag it out until they go through the trouble of drafting an offer, knowing full well that you had no interest. saban could have held a press conference this weekend, making his withdrawal known, and it would have benefited LSU as well as the sh*tfins. the sooner he notified miami of his intent to stay at LSU, the sooner they could have allocated more time to seriously looking for a coach, not carrying out token interviews. such a practice might not be advisable in the world of normal-people jobs (aka the real world) b/c you and i are generally much more dispensable than high-profile coaches. one blemish on the average joe's record will do him worlds more damage than it would someone like saban. i seriously doubt that if, by some miracle, he were to stay, that next year some other pro team would not give him a second thought because he withdrew his name from the list of potential replacements.

IMO, thinking of reasons why he would not have removed his name from consideration by now is a very weak hope to stand on. by all means, i wish it were a more sound argument. but, all things considered, its an EXTREMELY long shot. there's just too much logic that says otherwise, especially given the chaos that the situation has induced.
