There are Mestizo last names that are derived from Native American languages, not European Spanish, or a mixture of the two and can absolutely be considered Mexican names because they never existed in Spain. And of course, when referring to Mexican people one can make reference to Mexican names. It is a colloquialismm understood by all. The fact that the language is Spanish is not relevant. A chimichanga may incorporate the Spanish language, but it is NOT a Spanish dish, its a Mexican dish.
