The NFL commissioner wouldn't be able to implement such a rookie salary plan - it would need to be hashed out and agreed upon by both the NFL owners and the NFL Players Association in a new collective bargaining agreement. The strange thing is that the NFL Players Association hasn't been in favor of such a system. One would think that the existing players would want to have more money available to pay the non-rookies. I do agree it would be nice and neat if a system was in place that said something like this: "A rookie drafted #1, 2, 3, etc. is going to get $X for the first year." OR "A rookie drafted #1, 2, 3, etc. is going to get $X plus a known additional amount potentially based on his playing position, for the first year."
OK, if 4 million should mean nothing to a kid like Russell who's never had much, then it ain't SQUAT to a multi-millionaire like Al Davis and the $735-milion dollar Raiders organization.
The bottom line is if a team doesn't want to pay that kind of money for a rookie, they should not draft #1. In fact, they have the following options to avoid that kind of rookie premium: 1 -- Win more games 2 -- Trade the pick 3 -- Don't select number one...let the time run off the clock, and continue to do so until they're at a pick that they don't mind paying I don't entirely understand why it's a "joke." It's business.
I agree... a player (or any type of employee) is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. If someone wants to pay a burger flipper $1 million a year at a fast-food place, then that's what they're worth (to the person paying the salary). My only issue with the professional sports teams are when they are given tax dollars to fund/expand their businesses. But with an artificial cap on the number of teams allowed in each league, the teams have cities over a barrel, because another city/state will offer incentives for the team to move.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/08/19/mmqb/3.html WOW!!!! I guess the true picture is coming out.
Interesting, huh? I've read that in a couple of places, but King's probably the most reputable of them. I know there's a certain NFC team in Georgia that desperately needs a QB and face of the franchise, AND they'll have some great picks for the next couple of years as trade bait. I'm laughing just picturing LSU/Saints Fan completely melting down at even the suggestion of this.
obviously the Raiders have figured out JR aint worth that kinda change! This is the NFL, he cant toss interceptions, over throw player and fumble the ball and expect to chunk a hail mary late in the game for the come back. I've never been sold on JR and dont think he was worthy of the number one pic. For the two years he started for us I was always waiting for the bad play--it just seemed inevitable. Then he would make a series of miraculous plays to over come the bone headed plays. It drove me nuts. I actually had to stop watching some games last year out of frustration (the Tennessee game for instance). He is so damn gifted. Of course that is all just my opinion and alot of sports guru's think he will be hot. I'm glad we had him but I'm also glad he's gone. Sorry for the rant. It just kinda came on all at once. Geaux Tigers!!
Yes they could! JR would be an instant hit with most of the Falcons fans as well, and maybe deflect some attention. However, the Falcons have an unusually good chance of drafting #1 overall in '08, and Petrino's QB Brohm will be on the board. I'm not sure they can wait that long though. This sort of deal probably makes too much sense, so I don't expect it to happen.
